What have you got to say about the topic of: "Wind Knots". Here's how is started: "Why do I constantly get "wind knots" on my spinning outfits with braid? Is there "

Why do I constantly get "wind knots" on my spinning outfits with braid? Is there a trick to loading it, casting it, type braid to use........???? I end up with a mess, then strip it off, cut it, then it's fine until the next trip, then here we go again...........

| (( this is all i found on this, i have never personally had this problem so no idea!! )) 1) I switched to Power Pro 40lb test (10lb diameter) for surf fishing. I tried the 20 and 30lb Power Pro and (apparently like you) wound up with a TON of wind knots. So far I've had good luck with the yellow hi-vis Power Pro. If this doesn't work out for me then I'll revert to braided as a shock leader and mono for the standing line. 2) Well (admittedly it could be me) but what I've found is that braided lines when they are not kept under stress during a cast (light line into the wind) has resulted in some phenominal "wind knots" ... Maybe it's the wind in knots (mph) that results in wind knots? This might also have something to do with "no memory" in braided lines? I've experienced those nasty things on spinning reels (Okuma Inspiras and EB baitfeeders, Shimano baitrunners, Tsunami and others)... Ditto on conventional reels (Avet, Shimano and Okuma - with and without line winders) -- on those I KNOW what the problem is - an uneducated thumb coupled with colder weather (slowed reaction time & old age?). I still use the lighter braids too on lighter rigs(6 & 7 foot spinning rods to cast 1oz jig heads with soft plastic --- and have been known to use 60lb braided shock leader over mono - but I got away from that since I was having problems tying a good knot (non-slip) with a small diameter to connect the shock with a 17lb mono. I didn't like hearing the knot 'thumping' through the guides. 3) Generally you would get wind knots , not birds nests. Wind knots are usually down the main line somewhere..either in the guides or after it leaves the tip and the braid goes out as a clump. Birdsnests are when you are using a baitcast/overhead and the line overflows onto itself around the spool and your reel jams up and you have to try and un pluck it from the spool. If you have overfilled it would cause that, and since the lure you are using is quite light , the braid isnt packed on tight when you retrieve. You need to pinch the line before the reel every few casts and make sure its wound on under tension. Or you could use a heavier lure..... Hopefully this helped you out a little bit?? | ||

| What kind of Braid are you using and how are you spooling it on? I use Power Pro and never have any issues with it..... | ||

| What I have heard is it has to do with the fact that there is no stretch in the line, and the fact that it is very smooth creates a situation where there is very little friction and the line comes off the reel too fast. When Mono is spooled there is a certain amount of stretch which basically locks it onto the reel and creates friction when castedand thus not letting the line come off the spool to quickly. This doesn't happen with braid as there is no stretch. For spinning outfits what I have found is that not over filling the spool is one way to help the problem. I also mainly use fire line on spinning outfits. the shape of the fireline and the small tiny fibers you see in the line create the necessary friction to prevent the wind Knots. | ||

| What I've heard is that it really sucks to lose many snag hooks, diamond jigs, plugs, etc due to a wind knot getting hung up. ![]() Oh did I say I HEARD that???? I think I know LOL...... Anyway, that said, I'm fishing the same braid this year (30# Fireline on my 704's, 65# PP on my Avet and a few other conventionals) and haven't had any issues for some reason. However, coincidentally, I switched my 704's to Bail-less using the conversion kit after last spring. I wonder if it's just a coincidence, or if the bait hoop was causing some sort of line twist in an odd sort of way???? HMMMMMMMMMMMM..............

| Albatross, I'm using the red power pro in 30# test. I used the new fangled power pro package that has the tension box thingamajig (the new PP box) and winding it on tight. Somebody told me two things.......wet the line when spooling, and wet the spool before fishing/casting........ Using Shimano Spheros reels Some good info here I tell ya!!! At the rate I'm going it would be cheaper to buy the PowerPro company

| I love the power pro braid. However, I never really cared to use it on spinning tackle even though several form members concluded it is great way to go. Mono works so well on spinnings reels, and unless one goes crazy and buys the most expensive mono line out there it is really a very inexpensive line to use. The only time one would get into a problem with mono is if too much line is put on the reel or if one cranks the handle as drag is being pulled out by a fish. Never try to reel in when a fish is pulling out line; you would just be asking for trouble. I am not too happy with power pro on a conventional casting reel either. Blood still rushing to my head when I get into a school of feeding fish and I will be dammed if I do not forget everything I have ever learned. Almost always, I force my first cast, get a backlash, and the shock that my reel receives from these super no-stretch lines as my 100 mph lure abruptly comes to a screeching halt has got to be bad. I am surprised I have ripped the reel right out of the reel socket. When it comes to bottom fishing, then power pro really comes into its own. Usually I use 65 pound test only because anything thinner is just too difficult to feel bites with as I always finger my line. Think of it like having 20 lb test mono on steroids. Great stuff.

| Is it just happening on one specific reel or has this problem happened before to you with other spools of braid and differrent reels. maybe you just have a faulty spool of some kind. Next time you are out let all of the line completley out and then reel the spool back in tightly. That might fix it.... Sport & Commercial asked if the reel was overspooled. This would definately cause wind on knots. Good Luck! | ||

| Did you use any type of backing before putting on the power pro?
