Banned....

I recently got banned from a favorite site for posting this:

It was a woodworking forum. I figured, "no big deal, I'll just wait and start with a new user ID".

Wrong!

I changed my IP address, different email address and cleared the cookies. All to no avail. Somehow, they know me and continue to block registrations.

What are they doing? Are there any work arounds?
It was on a ubb.threads board.

Any help would be appreciated. I promise to behave there I just want a fresh start.

Jay,

How did you "change your IP address"? I see that you have had a few while on here, but there arr other ways too.

Some cookies capture the what is called the MAC Address for a computer. If this information is "collected" by the site, which it can be (and is not here), your IP address is irrelevant for a ban, as they will use the machines MAC Address, which you cannot always change (unless you change out the physical NIC). I will check around for you, and it is interesting. There are routines for updating the MAC out there though, just be careful and make sure it is all correct.

What is the error you are getting when you try to register (full literal)?

I did an ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew.
I then checked to make sure it was different and it was.

When I was 1st informed I was banned it was full, I couldn't even read the forum.
The email I got said it would be for 7 days. It also said that if I tried to re-register with a new one the ban would be forever.

Of course this intrigued me and I tried to get through with a proxy. That allowed me to read the forum. Sooooo.... I re-registered through the proxy. I know, slap my wrist
It let me register but then immediately deleted the account
From that point on, I could read the forums but not log on. They knew I tried so they made the ban permanent and allowed me view options only from that point to present. Now that's just teasing me!

Really isn't all that big a deal. I like te place but certainly can live without it. I'm more intrigued about how they are doing it than anything.

As I mentioned above, it's a woodworking site. I have a real nice shop and I think this one Mod has "tool envy"

I really don't want to start any trouble there, just start fresh. The place is a great resource for info and how-to's and I'll miss that greatly.

How can I get around this MAC issue? I had done some research and that is what it looks like but info is hard to come by.

Jason

Intriguing. I sent you a PM back Jay. I am wondering now if they popped the MAC Address of the actual cable modem. I am going to do some checking tonight.
