I just added a second PC to the house for the kids. It's running Vista. The PC I had been using is running XP. I added a Linksys wireless router and connected the new PC wirelessly The old PC running XP is hardwired to the router. It has the printer and other peripherals attached and I would like to be able to access info from pc tp pc and print from the new PC to the printer attached to the old one. Everything is working well enough for me to access the internet from either PC. The XP PC does not see the Vista PC. The new Vista PC sees the old XP but I can't access it. It says I don't have permission. Firewalls are turned off on both machines. I ran the network wizard on the XP machine. The Vista machine gives me an error when I try to run the netsetup program the XP PC created. What am I doing wrong? ![]() ![]() ![]() :Ban gHead:I did download and run the LLTD responder but that did not help. Help!!!!!!!

| It's not even that. Out of the box, Vista cannot communicate with XP (nice huh). There is a patch from Microsoft for XP which will allow Vista to communicate with XP, however, there are still intricacies to deal with. What version of Vista? Home Premium I am guessing. That being said, you will be able to connect to the Vista PC from the XP machine, and exchange files. Additionally, printer sharing should work. Access files on the XP machine from Vista will be nearly impossible without Vista being either Business or Ultimate. I have been dealing with this inanity since I started using Vista back in March of this year, and I have 5 XP machines, 1 Win2003 Server, and 2 Linux servers. The only one that I can actually connect to from Vista Home Premium are the 2003 and Linux Servers, and even then, the connectivity it not proper. Alot of it has to do with the IPv6 protocol, which is not supported by anything other than Vista and the yet to be released 2008 Server product. I'll give you more later, as I am beat tonight (the last 24 hours have been pure chaos, and fun). Brad- | ||

| More reason to get another PC (with Vista) for myself and get rid of this antique running XP. Actually, I would put this one in my workshop.

| Jay, I'll post up tonight with basics and then send you an email with the file. It helps Vista be able to see XP computers, and you can map them if you do it manually. XP will also be able to talk with Vista, as long as that machine logs on with a valid account on the Vista machine. | ||

| Problem as it stands right now is the XP machine can't access the Vista machine and vice versa. Both machines see one another now. I just get a "don't have permission" error now. I'm currently updating both with new symantec software. ![]() Man I hate this stuff! I think I may back up my older machine, format it and start from scratch soon. Too much crap on it... Thanks, Jason
