vacation bs

Just put in for a weeks vacation for this coming summer at my place of employment. I have been with this company for five years as of this june. this made me eligible for a second weeks paid vacation. as I was discussing this with one of the owners she felt that it was ok to tell me that I was required to take one week in the winter. after 5 years of service, giving up all my weekends/holidays and working 6 days 55+ hours a week every spring and fall. this just seemed a little ridiculous. I felt like putting in my 2 weeks notice and telling her where to stick it. I just thought i'd post this and get some of this off my chest and maybe get some other opinions on this matter. I almost feel like I am living to work and not working to live. taking 2 weeks off in the summer doesn't seem like a lot to ask to me. anyone else have to put up with this kind of bs where you work?

i put down 3 week from june to july ans my last in october to fish for togs.
i say F them all

They give you a vacation and then tell you how to use it.
Go F-YOURSELFS I'd tell them.

I have 35 days banked right now and if I wanted to take them all in one shot I could and will one day.

Wow, that is horrible. I can't imagine red tape like that for vacation that you have earned. Is the company a seasonal business?

For me, I too work 60+ hours a week for the day job, and many more in my side efforts. For my main job, after 20 years of service, I end up with near 8 weeks of vacation, and I take 2 x 2 week clips in the summer alone.

part of the problem is that I work for a family run business and yes they do most of their business in the spring months. That is what really gets me because july and august don't classify as spring months to me. You would think after 5 years of servitude the least they could do is allow me a week in both of those months. I understand that they have a business to run but I have a life to live and no paycheck is worth giving that up. I think that if I new this a few years ago I would already have found employment elsewhere. well all I can do is start looking now and maybe I'll find the right job after this spring. it really sucks because I like what I do and the crew that I work with. All I can say to anyone reading this who is still in school is to stay in school so you can get a job where none of this bs applies.

Damn Brad...where do you work, in EUROPE? LOL

Hell, my old government job never even went up to 8 weeks, even at the highest accruals!

(Actually most companies in Europe START their employees with 4-6 weeks, and then they go up to 12-16)
