We have a 02 Sea Fox that came with factory installed trim tabs. The boat has been kept in the water since 03 and does not have any zincs installed on the tabs. Each year at the beginning of the season, I put a good coat of bottom paint on them and they seem to holding up well. Should I install a zinc on each tab to prevent electrolytic corrosion or should I keep doing what I'm doing? If I install zincs, do they make special ones just for this situation?

| I installed zincs on my tabs. After the first year the tabs showed some minor pitting without the zincs. Put the zincs on and have had no issues since. Do have to replace those each year. Easy and cheap.

| Most of the newer trim tabs will accept a square zinc right where the hydraulic arm attaches to the tab. You can also just drill a small hole in the tab, and install an appropriate sized tab zinc, the oval or round kind that have a top and bottom piece.... Some marinas are "hotter" than others, and it is always good to have protection on all your below waterline metals.

| Is bottom paint a good idea here? With the high amount of copper in it I thought it can create issues. Not sure but I thought I heard that someplace, thought I'd mention it. | ||

| Chris, the zincs are a good idea when slipping. Just make sure you obviously paint "around" them. We put the ablative bottom paint right on the raw stainless tabs with no prep other than cleaning and it holds up fine. In the fall i powerwash them and any loose paint flakes right off.

| I may be wrong, but if you paint trim tabs, doesn't it act as an expensive zinc anode?

| Nope, not as long as you have zincs on them. If you don't paint them you'll get growth and barnacles.

| I put Trilux on them because I also use it on my bracket. But definitely put zincs on them or bond them to something that already has them, but zincs are easier than that. | ||

| Thanks for everyone who responded. I did a little digging and it seems like most people use the round pancake style rudder zincs. I think the 2 inch zincs would be sufficient for my application. Any tips on installing them?
