Changing the water pump

Typically when people talk about changing the water pump are they talking about the entire assembly or just the rubber propeller ?

Usually it's just the rubber impeller and the gasket that gets changed. unless there is problems with the housing.

If it is an outboard there is also a wearplate involved. It sounds like you are working on an inboard though.

On a relative note we just got an impeller puller used to change the impellers on our 6-71 detroits. That little tool makes the job 10 times easier, almost enjoyable. It is a universal tool not Detroit specific.

I have engine mounted pumps on my inboard engines - I remove the impellers in the fall and slather them in vaseline and then leave them on my mantle to stay warm, allowing them to relax and to not dry out - I get 5 to 10 years out of them instead of 1 or 2.

This is a picture from an older outboard but the components are basically the same. Did you buy a pump kit or just the impeller. The wear plate is the big metal plate and the other part is the housing, then obviously the star shaped thing is the impeller. A good kit should have all those components. But the old ones may be OK. Yours should be similiar, What type of motor?
