| Flush Mount Rod Holder Installation I have a new Maritime 20D coming home in the next few weeks. The boat has no rod holders mounted in the "gunnel" (not sure if this is the correct term) or "deck cap". When I checked the boat out yesterday, the deck cap is pretty thick (nice) - just wanted advise on mounting flush mounted rod holders through this thick structure. I have a felling Alloy Toy has done this on his old 20P. The other simple question is what angle rod holders I should get. Choice seems to be 15 or 30 degrees. I assume traditional holders are 15 degrees. I plan on installing at least 4 rod holders. (2 on each side). I might put 2 in the bow area for circle hook tog fishing. Thanks - Jack |

| Jack, I put two in mine and would offer this advice. 1. put down tape(blue masking tape is fine) prior to going near you boat with the power tools. Won't get scratched. 2. Use a good sharp hole saw to make the holes. 3. IF you have room underneath, don't drill all the way through from the top. Drill until you see the saw just start to break through underneath on one side, then finish the hole up from the under side. Much cleaner and if material is thick no problem matching the angle because of the center hole. 4. Use a backing plate. I made some using starboard and bolted the holders in place. Also used 5200 and they won't be moving. p.s. making that first hole in your boat will certainly be the hardest.

| JackC, Going back in my memory that tends to work on occasion ![]() I had two 30 degree rod holders at the transom corners. Now, I used outriggers off my hard top, so I added two more 15 degree holders about half way between the transom & the helm station. This was tricky as there wasn't much room on the inside of the coaming between the side wall of the hull & the lip on the coaming. My 20-P was numero uno (1st one they built) so there is a possibility that they revised the coaming width a bit to allow for easier installation of rod holders. I also couldn't get backing plates on the underside so I used large fender washers and through bolted them.

| Rod Holder Installation Thanks for the advice on the rod holders. I THINK the newer deck cap is wider than the 1st one off the production line. I need to find some deep hole saws and go from there (with the advice to go from both the top and bottom). Jack |

| Make sure you drill into the gunwale at the same angle as the rod holder. Flip the rod holder over and use it as a gauge and hold the hole saw at the same angle. Most of the time you will have to change out the pilot bit will a longer one to keep it from wandering while on the angle.

| I agree on drilling at the same angle. You can make a template out of 2 by 4. Clamp it down and you will get the desired angle. Also as stated before put down the blue tape before drilling. Another thing to do that most do not is seal the inside of the hole. I brush on an epoxy. This is a must if there is wood in there.
