Helm Pod Rebuild

Here was last years winter project. If you look in the first pic you can see the original helm guage box. It was made of plywood and teak trim, It looked bad and was rotted in a few spots.

I was going to rebuild it to look like a pod from a large sportfish but decides to replicate what was there for ease and speed of building. I rebuild it out of 1/2 plywood for the front and top (Mounting surfaces) and the rest was 1/4" Luan. The front piesce was a scrap of Lexan I had in the shop. Routed shaped and buffed to a shine.

Any pix of the finished/mounted deal?

Nice work...I am considering doing a rebuild of mine as well, in the spring, since it is OE from 1982 (as far as the overall housing is concerned). I am not sure of what I want to do yet, so it may stay as is for '07, but who knows.

Possum - You got me in the middle of the post.

After it was built I rounded the edges with a 3/4" bit and covered it with cloth and epoxy. This shot shows it faired and mocked up with guages, compass, etc.

I made a gasket ot of black 5200 around the inside of the lexan. I let it dry for over a week and installed it. It seals well and allows me to remove it later for future installs.

Here is the finished product painted and installed in the boat with the winter cover on.

Here is a shot of the boat in the water. It makes the rest of the boat look like crap.

I wanted to do something like this but I have two kids and building time is at a premium so I just replicated what was there.

Excellent. Gives me motivation once I can get measurements in the spring, after the shrink wrap comes off.
