Holes in my deck

You guys said you wanted to see past projects so here goes.

This was a quick one I did last spring to acess my fuel tanks. After the introduction of Ethanol . I was having big problems with water absorbsion. First off the boat has FOUR 58 gallon tanks. Yes four. The builder ran all four tanks to one separator and put that separator in the worst location on the boat. You had to access through an 8" deck plate directly under the outboard. I decided to move the filter and replumb all the lines while eliminating two tanks from the mix. Problem was the tanks were directly under the plywood deck that was laid and glassed in after the tanks were installed. Problem no access to them and on top of that I repaired and repainted this deck about 4 years ago. I decided on Armstrong hatches because they are the best out there and least intrusive, no trim ring to install. I also bought them used.

So I broke out the trusty roto zip and presto ACCESS.

Maybe in the future I will recess them so they are flush with the deck but so far it has not been a problem.

After the holes were cut and the hatches fit I sealed the edges with thickened epoxy. After a season a fishing and repeated deck washings I have not had any water get past these. They truely are water tight. I reccomment these to anyone replacing the Beckson syle hatches.

You can see the top of one of the tanks in this shot.

Bryan, nice job. I love those Armstrong access ports also. They seal real good as I have them on my OB bracket.

If you haven't already, I'd suggest giving the raw wood edge in the cutout a coat of resin. That will stop any water from getting into the core and causing problems later on.

Bryan, Can you adjust the tension on those access ports, for various thickness materials?
Thanks.

Thanks guys and yes I sealed the edges with epoxy after the holes were cut.

Bob - You can adjust those to clamp on the thinnest sheet metal to a deck well over an inch thick. If you look at the bottom of the hatch that plastic bar is reversible for varying thicknesses. I highly recommend them.

Bryan, Thanks. Too many of the designs don't seal well and constantly leak.
