Mercury Optimax filter issue

Mercury Optimax DFI

To anyone who needs to know, I had Bills Boat Repair (good guy but he stays busy) put a in line filter/water seperator on my Angler last fall because the boat did not come with one. I ran into a Mercury Factory rep on a tuna trip and he told me to take it off as it would void the Warranty.A incorrect filter could cause the engine to starve for fuel and cause burnout problems. After checking with the factory they stated that that was correct and only Mercury filters and Raycors could be installed and with no more then 2 1/2" of vaccum. Bill put on a Raycor guess he knows and I'm waiting on the rest of the specs from him. Just for your info Also any thoughts or input on extending my warranty due to expire next July? As you know a little pricey. Thanks

I have a 2001 225 opti
I had many problems in the begining. Most of was factory recalls. there was an upgrade to the computer and larger injectors. once those were taken care of everything was great.
I wouldnt add the extended warrenty. I had minor problems here and there (like sensors)but nothing that would add up to the price of the warrenty. I have 670 hours on my 225 and it still runs strong
