oil in water

I have a 89 merc 150 hp ,is it possible to be leaking combustion past a head gasket.or should i say is that a common problem with a outboard,being as old as it is.engine runs good but misses at idle..

Do a compression test. That should tell you something.
If your talking about oil in the water around the boat, aside from environmental issues that is faily normal for a motor of that vintage. But if it is missing at idle it could be signaling other problems. How much oil?

I actually meant oil residue on the thermostate when i removed it ..I removed the heads and found what i think was a leak on the head gasket around the top cyl on right bank if you were standing in back of motor...

I have seen this before on older mercs some mercs have disposable headbolts i am rebuilding 1 now with them check before you reassemble also your head probally needs to be milled is it pitted??

Yes there is some slight pitting,so i will send them out to have them checked..thanks for the input..
