running o/b with no water

Bill,

I just had a boat surveyed and the surveyor started and ran the O/B for 10-15seconds without water. The weather was cold so the block was probably cold. I imagine the impeller wouldn't melt-down in 15 seconds.

Was this a very stupid thing to do? Do I have anything to worry about? Am I overreacting?

Thanks,
Joe.

Definitely NOT GOOD. The impeller is designed to run with water, and while the block probably didn't get hurt, the impeller can get smoked FAST.

I'll defer to Bill when he sees this, but I wouldn't like that too much.

Possum,

That was more/less my position but I tend to generally overreact on these kinds of things.

My reactions was ... "you did what?".

The surveyor was a long-time owner of a boatyard and marine center so he certainly knows more than I do but nonetheless it sounds kind of boneheaded.

Thanks,
Joe.

PS: I wasn't there to witness this exercise in "WTF".

You can wipe out an impeller in a matter of seconds running it dry. But the motor is perfectly fine.

I'm not endorsing it but I've seen it done a number of times. For a couple seconds to make sure it's firing up alright usually won't hurt anything.

Its alaways a good idea when you buy a boat to change the impeller so this way you know when it was done anybody tell you it was just done to hellp sell the boat buy they are really just BSing you I would rather smoke an impeller that not hear it run at all because if you change it when you but it then you will know that in 3 years it needs it again

I confronted the surveyor on it and he says "it is done all the time in the yard to check motors. as long as you don't run it for more than a few seconds then you are fine". My only concern is the motor, not the impeller (which I will change anyway) so I guess I am safe with what you all said.

Thanks.
