Topside painting

Hey guys I got a question. I own a 2001 20' seacraft and I am thinking about painting the topsides (Gunwales, and deck/hatches). The factory white with all the stains through out the years is looking preety tough. I would like to mabeye repaint it with a primer grey type paint to reduce glare and I think it will clean up better than the white it is now. Just wanted to know what the prep work would entail (if any) and what kind of paint you guys would recomend. Is this worth my while or should I just live with the ugly stains?

Check out the thread where Chuck A put in the new seats. He just painted the inside/deck etc. Maybe he can give you some tips.

For years I painted the floor, hatch covers and storage doors (wood) with enamel deck paint. (tan) worked fine, looked fine.

I like the tan and most light colors, other than white are so much easier on your eyes on a bright sunny day.

Dan just something else to think about. If your'e familiar with two part paints, you can use Gelcoat. Just prep by rubbing down with acetone and apply. A lot more rugged than paint and costs the same as deck and trim paint, about $25.00 a quart.

If the boat is a 2001 how bad can it be??? It seems some cleaner and compund should do the trick. Like 74Formula said try cleanser with bleach first. Any paint you put on it will not hold up as well as gelcoat over the long run.

If you decide to go the paint route. Check out www.classicseacraft.com there are plenty of seacraft guys over there that are good with the paint gun or brush to help you out. Be sure to take pics of the finished product for us. Good Luck.

Thanks guys for all your help. I have decided to completly go through the entire boat this fall before I put it away for the winter. If I do it now I will loose to much fishing time. I'm thinking about a white two part primer over the entire hull inside and out and then using a two part gel-coat from interlux. I went to west marine yesterday and they had a special on flag blue. Great color but I will have to use 37 fenders when docking. The whole hull below the rub rail will get the Flag blue and the inner hull between the deck and gunwales. The gunwhale tops and deck with get a cream color which is a darker white almost tan. And I am hoping to top it all off with a new fiberglass three sided enclosure if I can find one at a resonable price. If any one can help me out with finding any one local that my be able to sell or fabricate and provide a quote for a small fiberglass pilot house I would appreciate it.
