Sounds like it could be a tough row to hoe at times Scup. You are a rare bird these days!

I live on a very quiet peaceful cove that is the most beautiful piece of water that I have even seen. Typically I row out before sunup trolling a rebel type lure. It is just for fun because any striped bass caught has to be tossed back. Connecticut has a ban on commercial fishing for striped bass. It is rare when I do not catch several rat bass on the way out and occasionally a keeper which still has to be tossed back. I then fish with a rod and reel until I find where the scup are schooling up. At first light, after watching the sunrise, I check my pots, and then move them to where I now know the scup are. An hour later, I check my pots for the last time, do not bait them up at this point, since spider crabs will have a ball eating my bait with little chance of catching scup as they move away from the shallows once the sun comes up. Then I check my lobster pots and usually head home unless the blues show up which happens about 75% of the time. I like catching blues but they are worth next to nothing. As I am rowing home through a mooring area, I watch all the large craft first getting under way for a days fishing never realizing the old guy in the row boat has anywhere from 50 to 100 pounds of fish in his boat, most of which had been caught right under their moored boat while they were still in bed. Southeastern Connecticut is really a hot spot for fishing in the summer and fall. Striped bass, blues, fluke, porgy (scup), blackfish, and last year even sometimes bonito. The only species I really miss not catching anymore in numbers are the winter flounder and weakfish.
