Fuel Managment Computers

What are you guys using for fuel flow monotoring? I have had the small Navman unit and it s--t the bed after 3 years. Wondering if I should go with the same or go to something different. Opinions?

We're using the "Teak Stick Method" of fuel flow management in the Fortier

LOL, because it is considered a "commercial hull", it comes from the factory with the old stick-method LOL.

We are going to be looking into some sort of fuel flow system, though, but no actual fuel gauges.

I love the teak stick method. If you want to get the more expensive model you can get the "teak stick with notches" version but sometimes they are on back order or the kid at the box store can't find it because its not in the catalogue and the barcode sticker fell off.:confused1:

Seriously though I wish I could used the teak stick but my four, yes 4 tanks, Have this crazy fill pipe that bends in about twenty directions before entering the tank. I have heard the floscans are expensive and bullet proof, The Navmans are either loved or hated and the Lowrance units are a good choice also. Have you looked into them yet?

i have the new lowrance system in my boat (lmf200 gaugue w/2 ep10 sensors).

it is inexpensive, mounts in a normal small gauge area and has the ability to display a bunch of other nmea2000 information (e.g. trim tab position, lat-long, etc).

however, it sucks! at least for me. when i first installed it, it worked great and i was happy. however, after a short period of time it started malfuncitoning (reading very very low--ridiculously low). one engine first, then followed shortly thereafter by the other. so after checking a few things it was apparent that the racors (inline before the sensors) were in fact dirty. the element was filled with this strange brown crud that came off the side of the tank due to ethanol. they are 2 micron elements, so nothing ever got to the sensors themselves and the engines ran fine, but after i replaced the elements, the fuel flow started working again. for a little while. i checked the elements again and while there was a little crud in them this time, it was nothing out of the ordinary. i replaced them during winter layup (this time w/the 10 micron element per the engine mfr instructions)...so i will see if this solves the issue when i launch in the spring. either way, at best, the sensors are extremely sensitive to the condition of the filter elements. i would look elsewhere for fuel flow.

LOL, actually we DO have the more expensive model with the notches! On both ends LOL, one for each tank hehehehe.

No, we haven't looked into anything yet.

Bryan-

I just purchased a FloScan Model 8600 (diesel) for the Maggie B. It's not installed yet but is on the short list of remaining winter projects. I don't have any expereince with it yet, but did a LOT of research before I decided on the Floscan.

Will report back once I get it installed and a few hours on it.

Let me know, JD, because I think that will be an eventual add-on for the Fortier

Lowrance 111 HD with add-ons

I have the unit with the fuel add-ons installed and it's been great, but i'm not sure that it will work with diesel. We had a few teathing problems at first but they took great care of me and at this time it is more then I expected.

after running out of fuel with my guage showing almost a quater tank i added a fuel monitering system to my little hydra-sport. i put in the evinrude version to mate up with my ficht. not sure who makes it for them but i'm sold on the idea of a fuel monitering system. a couple of tanks to calibrate it & its been right on ever since.

Very easy to calibrate takes 2 or 3 trips that's about it
