Plug building question...

I've been playing around in the garage attempting to build some plugs. Is it necessary to seal the wood prior to painting? If so, then what methods are preferred.

I read the tutorial by H'islander and he mentions dipping in a mix of Val-oil and odorless mineral spirits. What the heck is "val-oil" ?

Also, I assume these are water based since you can't use water based enamels over a laquer seal.

What exactly should I do?

Thanks in advance.

Back in my younger days I did not seal the wood. after using it a while it for a while it gets water loged and the actions sucked. Then the paint gets bad. Now i seal with a 50/50 mixture of boiled linseed oil and mineral sprites. it works but i give it atleast a week to dry. I cant for the life of me find Val oil in connecticut. I know other guys use minwax or deck sealers. Im going to try those next. im no expert in the subject. there are alot of guys here that are better quailfied to answer. and you will get alot of different opions. to me there is no right or wrong way just alot of different ways.
I suggest 50/50 mixture of boiled linseed oil and unsented mineral sprites. I soak the lure in it for a few mins and then hang it up to dry.
good luck

After I seal it and let it dry I spray primer over it. i have tried many different primers. the one i like the best is BIN primer sealer in a spray can.
i got it at sears. after that a airbrush the lure. I was using spray cans for a long time but i have become very fond of the airbrush. then is time for the top coat. I have used spray clears with out a problem but I like the ETex topcoat the best.

There's nothing more heart-wrenching than seeing a plug you spent time and effort on split down the middle from swelling - Water-logged plugs go dead (action -wise) - Seal the plug, it's cheap insurance. The cost to seal and later epoxy with e-tex is about 10 or 11 cents.

A: Don't use outdoor sealers such as deck sealers - they contain a wax to aid the water-beading effect - wax & paint don't play well together.

B: I don't use Boiled Linseed Oil because the soaked rags will often spontaneously combust - Bad pizza.

C: Val-Oil can be special ordered from Lowe's - Takes a week - the gal can is $14 plus $5 shipping -

Chuck, I'm making them because I'm bored and it's more fun doing something while I'm in the garage smoking cigars and drinking some brew. ;)

I use the 60/40 Linseed/Mineral spirits. Has worked for decades in the family.
But no cigars while sealing/painting!
