What have you got to say about the topic of: "Plug building question...". Here's how is started: "So then if you are using linseed/mineral spirits, then youz guyz are using oil based "

| I would think they are. Rule of thumb ... oil sticks to anything and nothing but oil sticks to oil.

No - I use the oil-based sealer, I prime with a shellac-based primer, and I paint with acrylics. You can use BLO, but it is my opinion that there are better performing sealers out there that do not have the risks that Boiled Linseed Oil brings to the table. BLO is old school. It works, and it works well. When using BLO you MUST MUST MUST MUST let it cure (not dry....CURE) for at leat 7 days in a relatively dry, warm area - 10 to 14 days in your unheated garage in the spring/fall - forget the winter. Do not do this, and BLO will shed your paint like a snake sheds its skin Just as there are improvements over the lead-based paints used up through the 60's - there are improvements in sealers, stains, primers, etc... Use any oil based furniture-grade sealer to seal your plugs - including BLO if that's what blows your hair back (potentially, litterally) - You can use enamel primers or shellac primers. I prefer Zinsser's BIN primer in the rattle can. Once dried and cured that stuff is like a ceramic coating - hard as nails. On top of those primers, acrylic paints find love - much love. I use, almost exclusively, Createx airbrush paints - They have a phenominal selection of colors and effects (chameleons, irridescents, pearls, etc..) Good tough paints once dried and cured. | |||

| Oh - Almost forgot - Val-Oil is a Valspar product, but for some reason they are not directly associated - can't find val-oil on their web-site. | ||

| H'Islander, very interesting and informative. I was at the paint store yesterday and they had many oil based sealers available, no val-oil, but had BLO, etc. I will try some type of oil based sealer, then the Zinssers BIN, then the regular acrylic paints that I have. Thanks much. | ||

| I use BLO and use oil based primer and oil based paints. It's a little more difficult to work with but if there is a break in the clear coat I know the oil paints will hold up. I will be trying some val oil this year to see how it compares ;). Just watch what these guys are doing and what their end products are and you won't go wrong. Armand | ||
