Depends on what I'm fishing for and if there is distance involved. If it's a squid popper white and pink bucktail on no less than a 6/0 siwash. If it's distance, just a treble hook. I noticed on the swimmer in the picture you have saddle hackles tied in. Just MHO...no tails on swimmers...cuts the action. If that's what you're trying to do then leave them.

MHO, i have spent three years perfecting the swimming action on these plugs, tell the tons of fish that have fallen for it that the tail doesnt work. but thats just my opinion

And I bet the action is terrific! I have also used hackles as well as buck tail on swimmers. The action is a bit less dramatic and still catches plenty of fish. I have only been building plugs for about 2 years, so your expertise is far superior to mine. Over the past 50 years I've been modifying them to see what makes 'em tick. In retrospect I looked at that plug again and took note that there is no hook in the tail saddles...ahhh there in lies the key! I just tied some tails yesterday for swimmers...no hooks...I tie very sparse, but none-the-less it's still a tail on a swimmer. I think that the reason that I often don't use tails, or have removed them from purchased plugs is that they, and I, usually attach 4/0 trebles and dressing them takes quite a bit of material which in turn changes the action. It doesn't eliminate it, it just slows it, which I'm certain is not a big drawback, but if it's commotion that I'm looking for and poppers and spooks aren't being taken, then it's active swimmers that get tied on....When that fails...plastics...THEN GRENADES!

I love making poppers. I also love getting feedback from guys that fish them. This past season I learned that 6/0 Siwash hooks should be considered "minimum"!
You can decide to dress the hook or not. I like a light hackle oe thin bucktail! Too much hair and you are dragging a mop across the surface.
