Red cedar is like poison ivy to me....
You couldn't pay me to get near it.
I hope you are not as bothered by it as I.

I made some swimmers out if it. It is light wood for sure. Also it's a little harder to sand the grain down. It wants to raise when you sand it.

I read something that made me laugh yesterday.

Quote:
There are two kinds of woodworkers: Those allergic to sawdust and those not yet allergic to sawdust.
Seems what I experienced is quite common.... It takes one wood reaction to set the body off, from that point forward, you become more susceptible to all woods.

I personally wish I had never touched the stuff. The first couple dozen times I used it, I was fine but over a gradual period, I would get more bothered by it. First, it just made me sneeze on occasion, then watery eyes, then inflamed sinuses.... It was all down hill from there... Now any dust makes me sneeze and some make my eyes water. I suspect they will all follow that path...

Be careful with the stuff. I was warned and discounted it. I'm now paying the price....

Actually Pat, you took the white cedar... That never bothered me until the red cedar became a problem. Red cedar is much more offensive.
If not for the red cedar, I don't think I would have a problem.... It's the red cedar that set me off and now all woods bother me...

I should have stuck to just the white....: BangHead:

Red Cedar affects many people I know that do woodworking. The sawdust is and can be a real pain to many. Maybe that's why it's used in place of moth balls in some cases.
Atlantic White Cedar, if you can get the good stuff, doesn't seem to have that affect and I believe is a much nicer wood to work with for carving.

OK, I'll stick my neck out again!!! I have about 10, 3 foot pieces of AWC (Atlantic White Cedar) and 80 feet, in 2 foot balusters, of AYC left over from the bash at H'Islander's. If you are in the RI area it's $1.50 per true 2" X 2" stick of AWC and $1.00 per foot for the AYC. A saw mill owner friend dropped the wood off for the guys with whom I build plugs. These are his prices, my "commission" is an occasional plug from the builder!

Atlantic white and Northern white are both very nice as are the cypresses. AYC is also a cypress.... Pacific to be exact.... The clearest of them all in my experience. Too costly though.....
All very light and nice to work. Unfortunately, they all bother me now....
