I, like most fishermen like the VMC line of hooks. However, I'm not all that certain about the siwash. Yes, they are tough and sharp as hell, BUT I have had a few open during when hard fighting slammer blues put 'em to the test. No, they did not straighten out, nor did I loose a fish, BUT they did open a bit. I use 5/0 and 6/0. I couldn't help but think what would happen if it was "the bass of a life time" or a nice school tuna. With that in mind I took to the cyberspace airwaves and found some Mustad #9175 hooks. I think they might be called live bait hooks??? They are closed ring so you need split rings, but I think these suckers can tow a truck. They are a bit heavier than the VMC's, but they haven't had an effect on the action of the plugs that I have used them on. They are not as sharp as the VMC's so they require a little file assistance. To keep 'em from rusting I hit the filed spot with a silver paint pen and I've had no problems with rust. For that matter I also use the paint pen on VMC's when they need a touch up. Top are the 6/0 VMC siwash...Like you didn't know...botom are the Mustad 9175. They both dress quite well for a night on the town (water)

Good info FishDoc.
Never had a problem with VMC hooks opening up.
But we use the closed eye #9170PS.With Rosco XHeavy SS Split rings.
I posted some pics in the international forum of some friends who caught some beautiful fish in Mexico.
One of them did have a monster Jack Crevalle straighten out the 5/0 vmc
on one of my 3oz T-HEX's.Musta been huge! But the eye of the hook was fine.
