Bought my boys some last year for a stocking stuffer......they are an awesome gift

We sanded them then soaked them in Helmsman "Spar Urethhane" then painted them with regular model paint.......the best thing in the world was when we first fished them. Beautiful evening on PT. Judith salt pond, only boat out there, and nice 28"-32" plus bass feeding during the pond tide. The boys hooking bass on their homemade plugs was simply awesome

The paint chipped easily.....not sure if you should seal them again after painting them.....

Great plugs

From someone who builds thousands of lures a year. I'd first soak them with a sealer like Boiled Linseed Oil or General Finish. Then let them dry well and prime them with Kilz or Bin. then sand and paint with oil bases paint like Rustoleum or similar then you can give them a very light sand and coat with either epoxi or urothane. Those kits are a great way to start off with building. If you want a larger selection of kits look at www.njtackle.com

Be careful with boiled linseed oil. If wipe rags are left in a crumpled heap they can spontaniously combust. Spread the rags out to dry or store in a bucket of water or in a tightly sealed paint can. Better still get some Val Oil mix it 50/50 with odorless mineral spirits (not he "green" type) soak cedar plugs for a few hours and harder wood plugs for as long as possible. I soak hard woods for no less than 12 hours, usually 24. I will actually be "sealing" the plugs 2 more times after the val oil dries (2 - 3 days in a very dry basement). I will then dip prime my plugs twice in an oil based sealer primer (Zinnser) mixed 50/50 with the same mineral spirits. 2 - 3 days drying time between dippings. I have experienced very little water absorbtion when done this way allowing the plug action to remain constant. However it's PAINT ON WOOD, when's the last time that you saw a painted house that NEVER needed repainting??? Now they are triple sealed and double primed...ready for paint then epoxy. I really don't care what you do to the surface of a wooden plug when your done...epoxy...clear coat...etc. Hook swing, blue fish, rocks, poor handling after and before use will eventually defeat the best final finish. A lot of the guys with whom I fish call this MOJO. A plug with mojo has seen action and is usually the GO -TO plug when all else fails.
