Toggin'

Can I bring my own cane pole if I win? When I was a kid I had no money and couldn't go in the water because of ear problems. I was 6 and my family would go to the beach every weekend in Ct near New Haven. I would collect some fidler crabs in the marsh and dig some sandworms. On the edge of the long beach was a rocky point with 6-8 ft of water. Nuts for sinkers and rusty hooks scavenged from the livery boats with a well used 12' cane pole intended for little snapper blues. The fight was extreme and often I would have to coax a good fish near the sandy shore since I could never lift them. What a site it must have been to see this little kid standing in the water with the cane pole bent to the breaking point and occasionally landing these beasts. Fish up to 8 lbs were landed, broken lines, poles and hearts all around. Would catch bass, winter and summer flounder, blowfish [my favorate],scup, weakfish, and blues. Anything would do.
When I was 8 they let me out in a tiny rowboat. But thats a whole new chapter!

I don't qualify for the free trip but here it is anyway. I fish out of the Bass River. Try to get out once or twice a week, it's a little hard with a 3 and four year old at home. Early season I fish for bass, but once the tuna come in I neglect the bass. I am going to try to fish for more bass this year. I have a 25' Boston Whaler "Two Bobs" with twin 150 Mercs. There is always room on my boat for one more, I don't know many people on the cape and usually fish with my dad or alone. Last season noteable catches were 145# bluefin, 175# Bigeye and a 293# Thresher. My biggest striper was around 40# caught 25 miles off Chatham on a squid rig. I thought I had hooked weeds On my shotgun rod which is a Penn 80VSW. Not much more here, I am ready to get going. I think in the next couple of weeks I am going to get all the gear out, start making squid rigs, putting new hooks on lures, ect.

I'm pretty sure my wife likes to get rid of me. I also am a salesman and can sneak out on weekdays a lot, allowing me to still spend time on the weekend with my kids and wife

Hi everyone my name is Dan. A lot of you probably know my son CKonkol. Well he finally convinced me to sign up to the site. Dom it was great meeting you last weekend.

I fish a lot in RI. I do all my fluking there and Blackfishing. I make a few trips up to Eastmans in NH, Helen H in Hyannis, Down to Jersey for some Giant seabass and as of recently we tried out the American Classic and plan to go there again soon.

My biggest fish was caught in 05 on the Yankee Capts it is a 150lb bluefin that stayed under the boat the whole time. I also got a 125 yellowfin a few years ago on the Big Jamaica, unfortunately I don't have any pictures of that. MY biggest cod I got years ago on the Super Squirrel from Point Judith. I was on vacation up in RI and decided to go fishing while I was there. I had none of my rods or other stuff. All I walked on the boat that day was with a small cooler for some food and drinks. I had a rental pole and didn't get in the pool. I got the biggest fish of the trip a 37pound cod. As many have said with large cod I really thought I had bottom until it came to life. I also had a very large winter founder that day as well.

Five years ago when I first started takeing my son fishing it was his second trip out, we were fluke fishing. Again we were using boat gear as it had been awhile since I had been fishing and my gear was in no condition to be used at the time. I got the biggest fluke to date. It measured 30inches and I never got a weight on it , just called it 9 pounds.

This past blackfish season I got my 2 largest tog. Both were 10lbs. The first one I had i really thougt someone was messing with me by loosening my drag, I didn't think the fish was that big at the time until I got it to the surface.

This past weekend I got conned into going fishing by my son and our buddy Eben "its supposed to get up to 48 degrees there only going to be 1-2 footers" Well it was no where near 40 that day. And it wasn't 1-2 but I am glad I went. It was my best cod trip in a while. We were on the American Classic. I got my biggest cod since the days I used to do the overnight Nantucket Wreck trips with the Frances Fleet. The fish was 25lbs.

Great Post, Dan

It was really great to finally meet you as well. It is so nice to meet others who enjoy the entire experience of fishing, not just killing fish. You guys travel quite a bit to the fish, and love the PB experience as I do, the food, the comraderie, the fun...catching is secondary. You are raising a fine son, he is not only a great fisherman, but a good, honest, and fun kid as well. I always say when people get their children into fishing, they turn out to be fine examples of a good all around human being, and stay out of the troubles that pitfall alot of todays youth. As a young guy, I was getting worried that there was a shortage of others not only my own age, but from the generation behind me as well, to carry on the great sport, or way of life that fishing is. Chris gives me hope that there will be others to pass it on the the kids to come.

That tuna was a monster, must have been one hell of a fight under the boat!

I look forward to fishing with you, Eben, and Chris again real soon. Hopefully you guys can get out on the NBS trip on the 14th.
