I think tagging programs are a great idea and would gladly turn them in if I came across one. I've played around with the tagging maps and it's really amazing to see how these fish move and their growth rates. I don't need an award to do the right thing. It's important to th fishery. I tend to think anyone who caught one would. Nobody is gonna catch a fish with a tag and say "hell I'm not gonna turn it in becasue I don't get a prize". But it's disingenuous to offer things to people you have no intent on making good on and in the end THAT may stop people from participating just becasue they are pissed off at being lied to.

I couldn't agree more. and these are the opinions that need to be heard. And also the fact that out of the few people that have answered this post all have either caught a tagged codfish or know of someone who has and has not seen a reward is bad policy
I cannot promise anything but I will look into this more but I can't stress enough for all of you to use the contact info and the questionarre. as this will show them it is a bigger problem than just one person complaining.

Thanks and I will keep you updated.

email sent out

Hello Sarah
My name is Curt Maxon and I tag codfish for SMAST. I just got your 5 year report and was very impressed.

While sharing some of the info with fellow fisherman and urging them to fill out the online questionnaire they informed me that a lot of them have either called in tags or know of others that have and have not seen any rewards.(quotes from some above) I am not complaining just trying to get an answer. Are all codfish tags rewarded or do they just choose the people randomly???? and do they at least send them back the tag report with the info and tell them that they either won a reward or not.
I have only caught two of your tags on our boat and called the info in but the rewards were sent to clients

I have already emailed Shelly about another issue and know that she is out of town. You can pass this along to her if it is not part of your Position.
I think the first quote sums it all up very nicely
Thank you for your time.

Capt. Curt Maxon

I will let you all know when I get a reply

Answer.

Dear Capt. Maxon,

Thank you for your email. I do apologize that some of the people you know have never received their rewards. There are a few possibilities for this: There are other cod tagging programs in the region and I am not sure what their reward policy is. If we receive tags from those other programs, we forward the information to the respective program and send a letter to the person who sent us the tags informing them of this procedure. We expect the relevant tagging party to take it from there. Another possibility is that if a cod tag was caught on a charter trip, whoever’s information is given with the tag information receives the reward. For example, if a customer on a charter trip calls in the tag, the customer receives the reward. As you mentioned, sometimes, a captain or crew member will call in the tag and they might give us the customer’s information. We can only give out one reward per fish, so we send the reward to the person whose name is given with the tag information. Finally, we can only send out rewards to those who have provided us an address – believe it or not, sometimes we get a message on our toll-free line and the caller doesn’t leave their name or phone number, making it difficult to call them back! We make every effort to reward every tag that is called in, provided we have enough information to send out the reward. Every call is returned. Often, a call will be returned and a message will be left (sometimes 3-4 times) to clarify the information left on the message, then we will never get a call back, leaving us with incomplete information, making it difficult to send out a reward.

If your friends who have not received their rewards feel comfortable, please have them either email me or call me on the toll-free tagging line at 1-866-447-2111 and I will be more than happy to look into why they may not have received their rewards. Again, I apologize for any inconvenience and I can certainly understand their frustration at not receiving their reward.

Thank you for your support of our program and please continue to look for yellow and blue cod tags – there are still a lot out there!

Best regards,

Sarah

Thanks for pursuing this Curt. I'll contact my buddies and see i they still have their tag info. I doubt it since it's been a couple years now. I'll forward them this info anyhow.

I recall when they caught those fish it was on two consecutive weekends in a little hole not far from shore. So it appears they migrated from wherever they were tagged to this little spot that doesn't hold fish for long, but they must have done it together. I found it very interesting.

Hi Curt,

I checked with my guys, and as I suspected any info they had regarding the tags is long gone. So it may very well have been from some other program.

Glad to see you got your stuff!
