I have never been Cod fishing, and I think it might be fun. Were do you have to go to get Cod? Do you have to go really far out?

Typically Cod are found in depths of 100' plus of water. Stellwagon Bank and Coxes ledge are two good spots in our area that are worth a shot. You will also catch other species such as Haddock, Pollock, Wolfish, etc. while Cod fishing.

cowcatcher,

to really target Cod, you need to get out to Coxes Ledge from RI. If you want to go serious, head up above the Cape to one of the many charters up there. I can provide many recommendations if you want, just PM me (I don't want to hijack this thread).

Frances Fleet is a good operation, and they appear to be doing well with the Cod so far, but this is a fickle fishery in the Coxes area.

My dad and I fished the Frances Fleet Sunday 10/7. What a difference it was from last Sunday. We only had 1/2 the people. Capt Rich decided to try some spots that he hadn't hit in a while. First stop we made a drift. I got 2 dogs and a sculpin. My dad got a short cod. They guy next to us in the pulpit got a nice cod that was super fat in the 20-25 pound range. Rich said lets do this drift again and as soon as Rich made this announcement out of nowhere the wind went from 0 to blowing 20 gusting to 30knots. So needless to say we were not going to drift. So we anchored up and didn't get anything so Rich made a move 7 miles to the east and we anchored up. The seas built significantly over the move made. While sitting on anchor my dad and I were getting our boots washed every 20 seconds from waves coming into the pulpit. After fishing this drop Rich moved to another spot once anchored up I grabbed my rod from the pulpit to fish more toward the stern and My dad had already had that on his mind since he beat me to the stern. What a difference it was from being in the pulpit. It was much easier to keep contact with the bottom. Rich came down and asked my dad What took you so long to move from the bow. My dad got a dog here and I got another sculpin. Rich made one last move and I got 2 more choggie, one was a monster measuring about 3inches. So my dad and I didn't manage any keepers but thats how fishing goes. I did notice that 3 guys in the Starboard corner had about 1/2 a dozen between them. High hooks had 2 keepers. The pool was in the 25-30 pound range. It was a tough day. I really believe the poor fishing was a result of the weather. Before the boat sailed the temperature was 74 degrees. By the end of the day it was 58 degrees. There was also a strong tide pushing lines toward the stern. I believe the fish were more focused on staying on the bottom due to the drop in barometric pressure as opposed to eating. Despite tough fishing and weather I had a good time and look forward to being back up there this coming weekend. As always Capt. and Crew did their best despite lousy condition.
