Last day of codfishing

Went on Dave B's 23 Trophy with Dave S. (Cruise Control) and launched out of Gloucester at the High School launch and I expected to see a lot of boats there but we were all alone at first light. Headed down to Stellwagen at a spot east of the Middlebank where we fished successfully before and picked around for some haddock, small cod, cusk, and a single white hake, and only a few dogs. We were using clams as the jig was not working. We were in 230-250 feet and while working this spot we found an area where the depth dropped off real fast from 235 to 260 feet in an area about the size of a football field and started to get doubles of cod and pollock. The pollock weighed in at 13-15 lbs. and will put a hurt on you in those depths. We shortly ran out of bait and ended up with 6 pollock, 14 haddock, a doz cod all others returned. Forgot Dave S. got a wolf-fish also; guess we got the slam for the day. A great ending of offshore codfishing for the year; already looking to next year.

We had a great day. What a way to end the season. Plenty of fish in the freezer to get us through the winter. I was also suprized to see so few boats on the last day of the season. With my boat put away for the winter I will be thinking of this trip and be looking forward to next spring and some more cod fishing.
