Myfishing Adventure from 8/16-8/30

Sorry for the late report on some things I have been away in New Hampshire on the 16th and in RI from the 17th through the 30th and finally got home today. So heres the report:

My dad Eben Nick and I went up and fished the super marathon. The weather was great. The first stop was slower than the one on the last super and I was thankful not to get beat up again by the large pollock this time. We picked away on some nice cod at this spot. I was using a 16oz lav jig so was Eben and Nick. My dad on the other hand was one with the dark side. Eben was high hook between the 4 of us with 10 cod and haddock and about a dozen cusk all on jigs. My dad followed with 10 haddock. He even got a couple double headers of keepers. I felt like a bit of a hack on this trip. I must have dropped 10 nice fish about halfway up. I think I finally hooked that 20lb cod but unfortunately dropped it soon after I hooked it. I ended up with 3 cod 3 haddock and 12 cusk. Nick had a rough time and was nicknamed cusk master with about 20 of them. Nick also had one pollock and a short cod. Capt. Phil really worked his ass off to get some nice fish in the boat but the fish just wouldn't cooperate for us. The crew was great and right there when you needed them. Oh well thats fishing and you can't expect to get them every time. We look forward to sailing with them again soon in the near future.

I have been in Rhode Island fishing for fluke since Friday and here is what I have to report. Friday I was fishing with my dad and Eben on the Gail Frances. It was a good day of fluking. The 3 of us were maxed out on nice sized fluke. Eben was using his unique spro rig he set up and went on doing what he does best with it, catching fluke. He got a nice surprise on it a 5 pound seabass took his rig and made Eben a happy angler. My dad also got a nice seabass a little smaller than Eben's his went around 3 pounds. My dad stuck to the traditional fluke bait fishing and easily got his limit. I was fishing a spro high low rig and didn't get much and switched to one of Eben's special spro rigs. The funny part about this was on this rig he had just cut off he got 10 skate in a row and I drop down with it and nail a nice fluke on it. With this rig I got my limit. Saturday the wind was howling when I got up the wind was blowing 30kts gusting to 35. The seas weren't bad at all. In fact the ground swell we had had Friday was now gone. This nasty wind didn't seem to have any effect on the fluke. They were out to bite anything in their way. I had on a whole squid rig and got 10 keepers from 21 inches to 6 pounds. I also had one that was 5 pounds as well. I gave away all my fish to those less fortunate. We had to have on 12oz to keep in touch with bottom. There were many limit catches that day. As the day had wore on the wind and seas dropped out a lot. Sunday was a little on the slower side the boat only had 150 keepers. There were a few shorts caught. The dogs also made their presence known but weren't hard to get away from. Most of the fluke caught were either just keepers or very nice sized fish. Today was a great day on the water. I was using a spro rig with a 1/2 oz pink spro then a 3/8oz green shad below the pink one above the sinker. I only kept 8 nice fish today but got 15 keepers throwing back the ones that were under 20 inches. Once again I gave all my fish away to those less fortunate and there were a lot of limits today.

Tuesday I decided to stay on land and do a raid on the tackle shops. I did hear that it was another fantastic day of fishing. I did go out on Wednesday and the fishing was good as well. It wasn't as good as Monday but it was still good. I started the day buck tailing and I didn't fair so well so I decided to switch to whole squid and try that out since we had a quick drift. On the whole squid I managed 5 keepers and a 2-3 pound seabass. Nick was also using whole squid on a rig I had tied and got his limit of fluke and seabass. Thursday my dad and Eben came back up. Fishing slowed down a little more but it was still good. We all went back to spro jigging and I got 4 keepers and a bunch of shorts. My dad and Eben also got 5 keepers each. Cory got 4 keeper fluke on whole squid. Nick had a tough day but got 2 Joe Fluke, both were 4-5 pounds. Friday was a good day for catching. I got 6 fluke and 10 seabass a porgy and a bluefish. My dad and Eben also did around the same. Saturday was a really good day. I got to meet Kilsong. Unfortunately I couldn't study his fishing techniques because he was fishing in the stern and I was up in the Pulpit. I was using my spro rig and limited out on nice fluke. In the 1st two drifts I had 3 fluke over 20 inches and threw back one 19inch fish. I limited out on fluke all over 20inches. On the last drift of the day I got a nice 5 pound seabass on a blue shad spro. I also had what was believed to be a 40lb striper that busted off close to the surface close enough to see color and rule out a huge fluke. Nick had 4 fluke and also got a 5 pound seabass. He got his fish in the morning on a pink spro. Kyle also had 4 fluke on spro jigs as well. Cory he didn't do to well. He didn't get any keepers but he did get to catch fish he got 10 shorts. Sunday was a little slower. On the first drift I started the day off right. I was sproing it and I hooked up and I thought some one was messing with my drag because line had been coming off my reel but it turns out it was because the fish at the time didn't feel too large but was swimming up but pulling drag then got heavy again. Turns out it was a Really nice seabass. We quick weighed it and it weighed 6 pounds and measured 22 inches. It is my biggest of the season and my personal best so far. I also broke one of my goals I set for myself which was to get a seabass 6pounds or more this year. The fish fell victim to a 3/8oz green shad spro. I also got another seabass around 2 pounds later in the day. I finished the day with 4 fluke and 2 seabass. My big seabass was also the biggest fish on the boat that day.Nick had 4 keeper fluke and 3 seabass all on spros. Today was another good day as well. I got 4 keepers and 10 shorts. I didn't fish too hard either. I think I would have limited out if I fished a little harder. I got all keepers on spros. The fish seemed to want the spros with little to no movement or just letting them sit on bottom. I got 5 shorts on the spros and 5 shorts on whole squid.

Tuesday I went out on the morning 1/2 day trip. The fishing was pretty good. There was a very good amount of fish caught. Lots of fish were in the 20-21 inch range with the pool winner being 22 inches. Wednesday I went out on a special cod trip with Capt. Frank. The objective of the trip was to get me that 20pound cod I have been searching for. The weather was absolutely beautiful. It was like being on a pond. Capt. Frank got the 1st cod which was a little small. He then hooked into a moose. This fish pulled 40ft of drag in one run. Unfortunately the line snapped where the hook was. Capt. Frank estimated the fish to be in the 25lb range. I did get the 1st keeper cod in the boat which was about 10lbs. Then Capt. Frank got a keeper about the same size. We moved to another piece where I hooked up to a nice fish which was taking a lot of drag. When I got it to the surface it was a very nice cod. It was that 20lb fish I have been looking for, for a long time. We then repositioned the boat to do it again and Capt. Frank hooked up and brought in a nice cod.We picked away on nice cod all day. We moved to another spot where I got my 2nd biggest cod which came to 16.5 pounds. When we got back to the dock we ended up with 12 cod the smallest was 23inches. We had a 20lb cod a 16.5lb cod a couple 15lb cod and the rest were in the 10lb range. Mission was a success I got my 1st 20 and it was in shallow water so it fought very well. I wish there were more places to get cod in shallow water because the cod fight so much better. Thursday went out fluke fishing. We had a good day of fishing. My dad got his limit of nice fluke up to 6lbs. Eben had 11 keepers only retaining his limit and I had my limit of fluke plus a 2 pound seabass. All of our fish were on spro jigs on a hi lo type rig with the sinker on the bottom. Hopefully the good fluke fishing continues to the end of the season. Can't wait to get back out there.
