RELENTLESS June 3rd Report

Capt Dave took the boat out east yesterday with four good friends for a day of groundfishing. We did not leave Green Harbor till 0700 due to the tides and got out on the grounds by 0900. It was whale city on the bank with eels on the surface as far as one could see.

The first stop produced great action on haddock picking through the dogs to get what we wanted. After a few short moves during the day we ended up with excellent numbers of large haddock, cod to 18 LBS and a few pollock and wolf fish.

The highlight of the day was seeing our first bunch of school tuna chasing bait early in the morning. It looks like tuna time is here and we will make out first tuna trip within a few weeks if the time allows us to do so.

It was great being on the water and once again we have availabity in June for both private and shared fishing charters.

PS. Pictures to follow tomorrow

Respectfully,

Dave

About right, BFT showing up in the first week of June. Good to hear the bank is alive and producing. Keeps the chins up for the rest of us.

STellwagen

It is a good thing the tuna have good eyesight..... the better to dodge gillnets and draggers. I was on the bank on tuesday, and it looked like the middle of july, except replace the tuna trollers with draggers. I counted 17 draggers there in the morning. It is like they own a 1 mile radius around the bank, then the gillnetters own from the the 1 mile mark to shore. What is the cutoff line on stellwagen that marks the "sanctuary". I watched one eastern trawler come up the rise close to the 100 foot mark on the nwc. Item 2 is striper bycatch. It has to be pretty aggressive, as everyone knows there are a ton of bass on the bank and bass gill pretty easy. I'm curious how many fishery managers were out there observing the scene. An idiot could surmise that if you pound the snot out of a piece of earth like that, it will not thrive......on top of that, I'm sure when that volume of fish hits the market, the price drops to nothing and they caught 2x the # of fish for less total money

Good to hear the bait is still around. The fishing sounds like it is holding in there as well.

See you all out there

It was nice meeting you last Saturday Dave. Looks like my planned tuna trip to the bank this weekend is not to early. I got two more fifties to splice up and need to load the tuna gear on the boat but it looks like it is going to be a beautiful weekend to go chase some early tuna.
