Stellwagen Thurs 6/12

I posted this info on Curts RELENTLESS report 6-8 sun thread and figured I shouldn't hijack it.

I am planning to head out to the bank on Thurs for some groundfishing. Anyone else gonna be out there? I'll be on 68/69 - Boat is the Resolution

I got out for a few trips in the beginning of April but an oil pan leak put me back on the hard until last week. Sadly I missed most of the groundfish season

Back then all the fish were keeping east of the bank. I've been seeing reports of mostly haddock. Are you guys (Dave Curt et al) up on the bank or still running a bit east?

Anyone else want to chime in feel free.

So we got a late start heading out of GH around 9:30 with myself and two good fishermen buddies. Trying to milk the fuel consumption I headed out to the old BE buoy at 25 mph and got there in just under an hour. Coulda done it at 30 mph and arrived maybe 15 minutes sooner but I'd rather save the $$ for another trip at this point.

Taking Capt Curt's (thanks Curt!) advice and moving east a few more miles I figured I'd split the difference between 120' and 180'. Got to where it dropped off into about 140-150 and started our first drift. All three rods were bent on the way down as soon as we neared bottom. One short cod and two pollock. From that point on it was game on for 90 minutes of hammering pollack, about 1/3 of which came on DH'ers.

In that time we boated 30 fish and probably tossed back maybe 20 more becasue the cooler was filled to capacity, and lets face it, who needs more than 30 pollock? We only made 2 drifts and decided to go chase some haddock with clams. We moved about 1/4 mile east and started a drift on jigs at first to see if the pollock were thick. Not much there. Maybe it was becasue we were beat and spent from the bail fest. We just didn't have any more jigging in our arms. Decided to bag chasing the haddock and call it a day. Heard Capt Dave on the radio and tried to raise him but had no answer...

All fish taken on 21 oz Norwegians. Pink was the color of choice. We were hitting them so hard we decided to play with some color choices and white and blue were left untouched. Pool fish was an 18 lb'er. Fish were STUFFED on big sand eels

All in all we headed out of GH, drove for an hour. Dropped lines in one spot. Bailed like mad for 90 minutes and then ate lunch and essentially headed home. Doesn't get more efficient than that! On the way back we got treated to a great whale show.

Enjoy the pics

Great Job Tom

Tom,

Glad you had a great trip, I am sure yourself along with friends and family will be eating pollock for a very long time.

Thanks,

Dave

Thanks Dave,

I heard your chatter as you were about to head back and wanted to see if you were interested in some of the pick.

Next time. Bob M was supposed to go but couldn't make it. I'll tease him with a bucket of fillets ;)

That's a lot of filets. Enjoy them.
The whale show looks great.
How close do they come to the boat?

This is a low quality clip that'll give you an idea ;)

The Cleaves Website

You are supposed to keep a few hundred feet off them, 500 yards for right whales. So you move into a legal safe position but what happens is they often work the bait in large circles. You could move in on them when they are 200' away but their circle runs right under your boat (that 200' is the far side of their circle). Then you get very close shows.

People have had them scratch their backs on the hulls of the boat. On this day I had to back off several times to keep a safe distance, like after this tail splash. We were watching them much further off, then he dove and came up here. There was another boat there as well and I can't say they were as prudent. I always leave the enigne running to let them know where I am. Don't know if that really works but I do it anyhow
