Avet SX or MXL....thoughts?

Looking to put together a couple more outfits (yes, my wife has already pointed out that I have something like 12 or 14 setups plus a few extra rods LOL).....

Anyway, I'm considering the Avet SX spooled with braid for Tautog, Fluke, Bass, and even casting to Mahi-Mahi, etc......on a 7' 20#-ish class rod.

This reel seems to fit the bill for the type of versatility I am looking for.

The new ones this year have a better handle, new laser-etched side-plate, recessed frame where you thumb the reel.......some nice improvements.

Any opinions/experience?

Also, rod suggestions?

**edited** the title to reflect the MXL.....which I was also looking at and is now being considered.......as mentioned in the following posts.

All we use are AVETS. Offshore we troll with seven to ten 4/0 2-speeds. Nice and small but they pack a punch and have never let us down. I have several MXJ 2-speeds and SX's we use to pitch bait to sails and Mahi. We have used them for several years, love them and don not plan to replace them. I plan to add several more of each. In the Ches Bay, we use the MXJ and SX's for everything from trolling to jiging. We have landed small (30 -40#) tuna on both the SX and MXJ, now that was FUN.

Thanks Ken!

Would you recommend the SX or MXJ for what I want to do? Would the MXJ be too big and defeat the purpose? Looked to me like the MXJ has more line capacity and a slightly greater ratio but the drag capabilities were the same?

I would go with the SX. The MXJ 2-speed is great for a REALLY cool fight on sails and small BFT/Mahi etc. However, it is probably over kill for what you want. That said, the 2-speed comes in real handy when we hook up with a 40# striped bass. I have not had a chance to get it down to Fl for a test on the reefs yet. Price vs performance, ya can't go wrong with the little tank SX. All of ours are rigged with 50# pp.

I use my AVET MXL 6.3:1 for Blackfishing, purposely. Great capacity to deal with breakoff and abrasion (I am spooled with 50# PP). The 6.3:1 retrieve is perfect for blackfish, as it pullls them right up.

I'm sorry Ken, I meant the MXL (the one Brad uses).......

The MXL and SX are the ones I am comparing right now.

So, Brad, did you look at the SX also or did you just go with the MXL?

Here is an avet with a triflex rod in action catching Togs. I loved the setup!

got a couple mxl set-ups on my boat 6.3-1 retrieve. coupled with a nice medium graphite rod this set up is sensitive & powerful. nice fluke rod. excellent blackfish set. hauled in 40lb stripers t&w'ing & with the lever drag comfortable livelining & chunking. of course i still keep 12 other set-ups on board....but the avets get a lot of use from me....imho...mk
ps of course the line is power pro 50lb

Can't say enough good things about the Avets. We use the LX 2speeds for jigging tuna down in the gulf. The freespool alone on these reels will make you a believer.

SX, MXJ or MXL

I am going to have to take a reel close look at the MXL. I plan to add four more Avets in this class. I was going to just go right to the SX because these will be Bay reels for the most part ... but, the MXJ-2speed is just really COOL, and the MXL might be the middle ground. I need to put the MXJ-2sp on a short stiff rod and see how it likes umbrella rigs. We currently use Penn 309's for that job.

I heard that Avet was going to come out with a spinning out fit, anybody heard anything like that?

Aboard the Honu, Capt Jerry uses all LX 2sp when inshore and AVET 50s offshore. Aboard the Round-Tuit, we like our tackle light, reel light
