I bought the MXL 6.3:1 intentionally. I wanted to be able to use it for more than just Tog and other smaller fish. The SX ust felt too small to me, when paired with the 7' Sealine rod I matched it too.

Personally, I think the MXL is the best reel purchase I have made yet.

OK....that's what I wanted to know from you....if you had looked at the SX too......

First of all, like you, I have big mitts.....so I also wasn't sure if the SX was going to be too small "physically" LOL. I've never really liked all those little tiny reels many people use. Too clumsy.....

The 6.3:1 ratio is very attractive on the MXL.....

What weight rod is the 7'er you matched it to?

I have mine on a Diawa Sealine Boat rod, 7', Heavy Action. It's actually performs more as a MH class rod with a fairly fast tip. It is the PERFECT combination for yanking Togs from the rocks, or putting a beating on Blues/Stripers on the jig.

74, Just saw this post. You can't go wrong with an SX for the fishing you intend to use it for. I have one, and use it for the same type of fishing. Pulls tog off the bottom, and I have caught bass to 35lbs. with it, no problem. I love this reel.

I fish it on a few different custom rods, mainly a Lamiglas CGBT 841M and a GUSA SW70H.
