Bailless Conversion 2008 Stellas 18000 - 20000

FWIW BlueFin Tuna fans and others that favor the large Stellas might be interested in this. Don't know how bailless would work chunking though. From the Plat site.

Well for one it will never inadvertently close during a cast thus snapping your lure off sending it further out into the deep blue than you've ever cast before.

Less things to go wrong - no bent bails - no worn out bail springs (I know the Stellas 10000, 18000, & 20000 are manual closed bails).

Less 'wind knots' as you are always in contact with your line when you pick it up with your finger to engage the line with the line rollers; this reduces the number of times you cross the line over the face of the reel spool which results in a deep seated loop. This last is the cause of most of the dreaded so called wind knots.

Check out my thread on my 704Z conversions. There's commentary on how I liked it after doing it:

Penn 704Z Bail-Less Conversion?

Sounds like something I'd like to try on a Penn 5500........possible?

Is the conversion kit something you buy, make, or just remove the bail?

bailless

I have been a big fan of bailless reels, and have modified penns and others for eeling to tuna. I never catch the line on the ball and the index finger pick-up for bait is a pleasure.

Hi gman,

Until you spring for the new Stellas I don't think you need be concerned about taking apart your present Stellas as the conversion kits, from what I can see, are only offered on the 2008 Stellas. However, when and if you spring for the new stellas a conversion kit might be handy to have on hand should something unexpected happen to your bail.

In the interest of full disclosure I've had some problems with my Zeebaas zx2 with dual pickups. Every now and then one of the line rollers/pickups will, due to operator error, grab the line on a cast. I'm hoping that upgrading to the zx2.75 model will solve this as the larger spool will have the line pickups spaced further apart.

Separate thread follows on the possible usage of the Zeebaas 2.75 for school BFT.
