| Well, it was inevitable, especially since Penn has been going down hill for some time (I suppose with the possible exception of their international series reels). The rest of their lower line stuff has really turned to junk over the past few years, and much was already made overseas. Substandard gears and plastic everywhere inside the reel, where it used to be brass and/or stainless. Even the exteriors had declined in quality. Personally, I think it will be interesting to see what they do. Shakespeare doesn't make the high end anything for salt (not sure about fresh anymore), too Walmart oriented (in my opinion). When you see Penn reels in Walmart or Target, it will be the end of an era. I suppose it could be a good thing, but greed and stupidity will keep that from occurring. Time will tell. |

| I'm slowly going to be working on replacing my smaller Penns with other reels as well......including but not necessarily exclusively Avets. But I will admit, my 50VSW's are smooth as silk.......and made very well, I've had them apart On the other hand, tho, I have a couple old Daiwa 900H Sealines from the early 80's that work way better than the Penn Senator 9/0's........the Sealines are so smooth I can't bring myself to get rid of them, even tho they are star drags.......they work awesome.

I have both 9/0 and 900h as well as avets(which I'm changing everything to) and some tld's The 900h's are a brute of a reel at a bargin If your getting into offshore fishing on a tight budget these are the reels to buy Mine are also from 81 They have landed thousands of fish I've replaced the drags 10-12 times the freespool lever is bent the 900h tag on the clicker side fell off and that is about it I learned how to grease the drag washers on another site and they serve as a heavy 50 700yds of 80# braid and a topshot of 80 mono about 150yds (sufix superior) I get 29#'s of drag if I want but usually use 17#'s as it increases alot more than an int when you lose alot of line | |

| Hi, A couple of weeks ago a Florida charter boat capt friend of mine told me that Penn was sold but he did not hear who purchased them. He also heard that the new company would make the Penn reels in this country. We will have to wait and see if that is correct. I find it intertesting that Shakespeare sold their blanks and antenna division, then bought All Star blank company and All Star blanks are no longer available. Hmmmmmmm! Who knows, only the SHADOW! (For you young guys that was a radio show back in the late 40's.) Capt Neil
