Level Wind Vs Non

I know level winds will impede a reels casting performance & are more susceptible to damage but outside of that is it just a personal preference ?

All my reels have the level-wind feature.

As long as I always have my thumb! LOLOLOL

I personally HATE levelwinds. Never liked 'em and saw way too many failures at the wrong times over the years to ever bother with 'em.

I'm so used to winding the line manually, I don't even notice.

That's funny because I don't have any reels that are'nt level winds (except an old penn). I have had great luck with them but I am thinking about getting a non-level wind due to the shear simplicity of them. I am very interested in Avet Reels are you familiar with em ?

There arte some fisheries you would not be able to use a level wind effectively, like Tuna fishing or casting any topwaters, etc. They are excellent choices for bottom fishing, especially things like fluke and sea bass, where you are often drifting slowly. They can also come in handy when trolling inshore species like bass and blues, especially if using lead core line. I also break them out quite a bit with inexperienced fisherman on charters, as it takes away the need to guides the line back on the reel during the fight. The angler can concentrate on just working the fish and winding in accordingly.

I use the Avet reels quite extensively, from the small sx inshore, the JX for Cod and jigging, and the LX for small tuna and inshore bait fishing, as well as 2 EX 2 speeds for trolling. They are superb reels, very good design and durability. They are on the pricey side vs. other comparable reels, but well worth the expense.

Looking into some small Avets to replace some of my smaller Penns as well.......

Dom, good point about level winds on Charters LOL.....

Amazing how many people just wind the line on a non-level-wind and it piles up and makes a mess and sometimes piles up so bad it hits the cross-support and you can't reel all the way in!

I think in my case it's personal preference. I like K.I.S.S. and less parts, less problems.

However, a lot depends on the quality of the reel!

I have both and have had levelwinds fail at the wrong time. I will usually give the levelwind to inexperince angle for the same reasons Capt Dom said.
I find if you keep them lubed up, atleast a few times a season depending on use the are good for about 2-3years. But that is true about most maitenace issues with reels. The levelwind has plusses and minus but just like was said before it depends on the type of fishing.

74 Formula, that is funny because about 10 years ago while cod fishing on the Bunny Clark I had a monster cod on while fishing a non-level wind Penn. To make a long story due to my excitement and lack of experience I forgot to thumb the spool and the fish got off about 10' from the surface.

Ever since then I have used level winds Penn 975's, 965's, Shimano Calcutta's (by the way the 700TE is da bomb) but want to get away from them because I feel the non-level winds can do everything a level wind can plus more !

I bought two Penn 320LD's last year so I'd have levelwind. As it turns out, that was probably not a good call on my part-just something else to break/maintain on the reel. Oh well.

No biggie, My goto rod has a penn 320 gti on it. Just be sure to keep the level wind mechanism lubed from underneath (wher the pawl is).
