| Penn 704Z Bail-Less Conversion? Anyone here do this before? I just finished converting my 2 704Z's to bailless. Basically they are now like the 706Z but with a slightly smaller spool size. BTW, these ARE "Made in USA" Penns, ~10 years old, I bought 'em new, and really do like 'em other than the bail issue. I got tired of the damned bail closing on me on these......this past 4 days of fishing the long weekend I lost many a snag hook and a couple nice lures......really pissed me off ![]() ![]() I know there is a rubber friction bushing that is supposed to help control this PITA of the bail closing but I searched low and high locally and on the internet and found 2 (the last ones he had) of these conversion kits down at Snug Harbor Marina, and picked them up. I'm gonna try them this way, never used them like this before. You guys lucky enough to be able to afford a $700 Van Staal know what it's like to use a spinner this way. So, what are your opinions/experiences? ![]() I can always convert them back if I want. I did a full teardown, clean, regrease/oil while I did it of course. Here are the before and after pics for those unfamiliar with what it does: BEFORE

| OK, I copied this thread here because I am wondering how many read the Rod & Reel forum, maybe someone will catch it here. I really am interested in opinions/experiences here. SURELY someone, especially all you plug-casters, must have done this, heard of it, or known/heard of someone that has done it? ![]() Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

| I haven't tried em out yet but apparently not as long as you're not slack a lot.... Look at the Van Staals..... The old 706 & 706Z Penn was exactly like this.... But as you wonder, so do I....someone tell me how well this works before I wet the lines again...... ![]() Otherwise, I'll post up when i try 'em out ![]() I'll bet it takes some gettin' used to, like everything else, but I'm willing to try it, it's obviously not a new idea ![]()

| Eric: can't tell from the pics. but do those have the roller bearing in the rollers ?? I have had one of those for about 25 years and have only rebuilt it once! Great for night fishing. Once you get use to it you won't go back! ![]() ![]() Don

| Don is that an actual 706Z? Are you talking about a roller bearing in the line roller? If so, no, you use the original line roller with nylon sleeve with the conversion kit. However, it moves very smoothly, I greased it up real well before installing it. It actually moved nicely before I took it apart, and it was not greased much then.
