| Pfluegar vs Penn Lookin at a Pfluegar 6740 spinner for a med-light rod. 10 bearings and water proof drag and $56.95. Feels a whole lot smoother than a new Penn 440. Anyone ever use one of these? |

I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED PENN FOR ITS RELIABLITY AND ITS DURABILITY,BUT UNSURE OF THEM COMPARED TO PFLUEGAR!! I HAVE NEVER USED THEM. THE ONLY REEL I LIKE BETTER THAN PENN IS THE ABU GARCIA FOR STRIPERS. I ONLY USE CONVENTIONAL FOR THEM. I LOVE THE SQUIDDER AND THE 7500 BIG GAME. PEACE HENRY ![]() | |

| Striperchaser' Until recently Penns' been my top choice also. My newest Penn is a 440 spinner that just hasn't held up to my expectations. Its less than 2 years old and already has more slop than my 712z that I got for my 12th birthday and I'm 38. I'm meticulous about maintinance but I think their quality has really gone down hill. As far as ABU goes, I own an original red 5000, a 5500 C4, a 6500 C4 and 2 7000 Lever Drag models and love them all. Those Lever Drags are badass enough to handle 150# Tarpon; I'll show ya next spring ![]() . |

| Both the Pflueger and Penn models you mentioned are made in China and are pretty similar. Given the choice, I choose the Pflueger as Penn is still marking up their reels way too much based solely on the "Penn" name, which is bogus considering that all their reels with the exception of some of the high-end Gold's/Intl's are now all made in China with the same substandard labor and materials as offered by the other cheaper mfg's. Just pick up a USA made Penn Gti and newer China made Gti and the difference in fit and function is quite noticeable. I have a FW Pflueger 10 ball bearing spinning reel (forget the model) and a couple of Pflueger Contender G15 levelwinds and have been quite happy with their performance and all have held up well. | I don't have any Penn conventionals , but I do have some older spinner models that perform Quite well. That 10 bearing spinner probably is the President model. I'm going shopping! |

| I decided on a 6735 model; it was better balanced on the rod it will be mated to, an old Hurricane 7' light noodle whip. This rods great for slinging small live bait; shrimp, small thread - fins, etc.. Purchased the reel at Discount Tackle Outlet in North Fort Myers for $46.95. I disassembled it to check out its guts and to my suprise the gears look stronger than the Penn's. There are some rediculously small springs in the anti-reverse and bail trip mechinizum(thats a spring between the brass gear and side plate) but they look like they should hold up. new pfleugar001.jpg There was very little lube, so I added some Hot Sauce grease and oil to all the metal parts to hopefully to prevent corrosion. new pfleugar003.jpg Here it is mated to her new rod and loaded with about 200yards of 10* Power Pro. Should be a good outfit to catch those 20 -30* permit crusin the near shore wrecks and reefs. new pfleugar004.jpg I'll ya Know....Richard |

| Great Pics. I enjoy working on reels, but those "small springs" give me nightmares when they pop during disassembly and vanish into this air. Todd |

| Thats why I showed a picture of them. The best way that I've found for removal and installation is a small hook made from single strand wire spring tool001.jpg |
