If it is for a kid, what does he need a level wind for, or for that matter four ball bearings or even a reel that's smooth. He needs something that is reliable and cheap. Go on Ebay and look for a decent Penn long beach series. You can't cast a dam with them, but there isn't a tog that is going to break it either. Let him learn how to use his thumb as a level wind. I own a couple of those Penn 310 graphite level wind reels with ball bearings in them. Do not care for them at all. The gearing is way too fast for togs, you do not need a level wind for togs as it is only another thing to break or wear out, and I cannot believe you son is going to be upset if the reel weighs an once or two more. It is a very simple straightforward reel and I think even easy enough for a kid to take it apart for cleaning and rarely for repairs. If he wants to cast as well, then any of the old Penn155s,sliver beach, surfmaster, or squidder reels, will also suffice. These too are simple reels with wide spools that have been around for decades. For what it is worth, I can throw a Hopkins a hell of a lot further with a 155 than the 310 even with all of its ball bearings. The level wind kills your distance every time.

thanks for the info scup, I'll try this first to see how it works. What you said is true, can't beat some of those oldies but goodies.

I try to stay away from ebay. Got screwed twice................

Scup has a good point. It's good to see your young'ins enjoyed the gifts so much. I remember learning to fish from my grandfather in the lake down the street on an old bamboo rod. You're doing the kids a great service.

Just for future reference I have an ABU level-wind and I really like it.
