rod for penn 950 for tuna?

Just picked up a Penn 950ssM and was wondering what the best rod would be for this reel. Looking to use it for casting at BFT. Thinking the Penn Slammer rod would be a good one, the biggest one they make for spinning. Any suggestions? Also, what size line should I put on it. I'd like to stick with mono especially with the 950's reputation with braid. Thanks.

The St Croix Premier SWS70MHF 20-40lb rod is well matched with this reel. It's a great set up for bft upto @ 60". Problem is you might be a little outgunned with the 60+" fish that seem to be around this year. Would actually be nice to see more of the 48" class fish that were here a couple yrs ago...

Star rod

We use all Star rods for our spinning set ups! I would have to say use the jerry brown 100 pound solid core braid for your line! This will hold any tuna you want to catch, we have even landed 250 pound blue marlin on this set up! The solid core will cast very far!

I have been looking into spinning rods, for Tuna, for a couple months and have not pulled the trigger yet. The two rods of choice for me thus far are, the OTI Tuna Sniper 349.00, and Fisherman's Outfitter custom Med/Heavy 279.00. The OTI will likely cast farther, but it's an 8-6 /2 piece rod and costs a litttle more. If anyone has seen the difference in casting distance between these two rods, please chime in.

Dangerboy,
I have experience w/ both rods and would 100% go w/ the one from Fishermans Outfitter. I actually just upgraded to the custom elite rod. That thing is a BEAST, but you pay for it. All FO's blanks come w/ a lifetime guarantee too. That right there is enough for me. The ONLY advantage I see to the tuna sniper is it will cast a little further. Not a considerable amount though. Fishermans Outfitter is great and would recomment them above all else!!! I have the one that you are looking at for 3 years and has hadled everything thats been thrown @ it. I matched that w/ a Stella 20000sw.

I bought a Shimano Tallus for around $140.00 bucks and it is a great rod we landed fish up to 65" with no problem.
