Spooling Penn International 50's

Well, I need to start thinking about putting some new line on my 50's (4 of them), as I do not know how old the line is.

That being said, should I have it done somewhere? If so, recommendations?

Secondly, what line would you recommend? Will be using primarily for sharking.

Will be spooling up a TLD30-II as well.

Most big line manufacturers, such as Ande, will supply their larger retail distributors with line winding machines. These machines work great, and can handle conventional or spinning reels. Retailers, love these machines as they are a very high profit making device. They buy line in bulk, and then charge a fixed fee per every foot of line placed on your reel. A counter on the line winder keeps track of the footage used. There is really nothing amiss here, as it does take some time to fill a reel and after all, this is a free service. The only problem I have noticed with this procedure is not with the machine but with the operator. Since the profit goes up with the amount of line put on, almost always the operator will try and put on more line than desirable.
I have never done this, nor have I ever seen it done in any if our local tackle shops, but the large corporate chain retailers can sometimes be tempted.
What ever happened to the method of running a dowel through your bulk spool, such that the ends of the dowel fits snugly in a five gallon pail of water. The water provides the necessary drag and lubrication as you manually wind the wet line on.

This is the method I use for all of my other reels. I have never spooled a 30 or 50 series reel, but I would imagine the same holds true. It's ALOT of line too, and the gear ratios on these things ain't what I'd call speedy. I'll probably have these done on a winder for both time and tension, but who knows, the good ol' fashioned way may be the ticket. It's just finding a large spool of the "right" line.

Yup, could do that too, but shipping the reels likely isn't the route I am going to go, albeit, I'd love to support Stew.

Possum - the hot setup is 80 or 130 lb hollow core braid to fill the spool about 3/4 then topshot with the mono of your choice. The braid will last far longer than the mono will and you have the ability to change out the topshot. Say 80lb for sharking then drop to 60lb for Tuna chunking. Also the thinner diameter of the braid allows you to pack on more line. I am slowly doing this to all my offshore setups as they come due.

The recommendation I have found is Jerry Brown 130 because it is cheaper that 100 or 80 for some reason and is far thinner than the mono.

I agree with Hollow core route as I have a few of my reels spooled with it. The only draw back could be in tournnaments, I have heard that because of the actual breaking points of the spectra it is not allowed under the IGFA rules.

i know people who would spool it for you up here, but that too far away for you possum, just spool it yourself, use braided for a base, and then 80 mono, works great, just when you are heading out to sea to go fishing, just let the spool run while under way, and then crank it in, gets the line good and tight!! Much cheaper to do yourself of course!!

line specs

1050yds/150lb spectra + room for 50yds of 100lb mono topshot!! this way never have to worry about being spooled!!

I'd spool them myself, with Suffix or Momoi Hi-Catch 80# in Smoke Blue.

I have Momoi on mine now, and while I have no problems with it, I may try the Suffix when I respool them next time.
