stradics in the salt

Just wondering if anyone out there uses shimano stradic reels in the salt and if so, how do they hold up?

I have a stradic 6000 I have been using for 3 years now and it has never seen fresh water, it is holding up great, i will mention though i am very paticular about reel maint. and am somewhat anal about giving all my gear the proper rinsing after each trip. Shimano however might disagree with me as this reel is not listed as a saltwater reel in their lineup. Mine personally has been fantastic.

From everything I have read and experienced the stradic does fine as long as you take reasonable care of your equipment. However, if you use it in the surf where it is getting dunked I would not expect it to last long without frequent maintenance (ie: full disassembly).

FWIW I have been very pleased with my 2500 and 5000 models for boat and light surf use.

thanks for the replies. I just purchased 2 stradic 4000 spinning reels to but on my 7' boat spinning rods and I just thought I'd see how other fishermen made out with them. they will be used primarily from a boat in the salt and I guess from feedback i've gotten that they will hold up pretty well. I'm just getting sick of penn reels and thought i would try something new. seems like penn is no longer the go to name in salt water fishing reels

"Pounder",

I am the "worlds worst" when it comes to reel maintenence. I switched from the Penn 5500SS reels to the Shimano Stradic 6000's, have a half a dozen of them. I just checked because even though they may still work OK at the end of the season, the "past product" seemed to sieze up over the winter. This will be season 3 of "reel purgatory" for my Stradics and they are still going strong!
When Penn made reels in the USA, they held up for at least a couple of years (even though I had to take them to the tackle store for their annualil, filter and lube). The last batch of Penns I bought didn't even last a month (that made in "where-ever" crap really sucks)!.............JC

the newest penn reel I have is a 6500 ss and it is a $150 peice of garbage. I used it roughly 10 times and it is shot. I will no longer be buying any penn spinning reels. I will say that their baitcasting reels are still pretty good. I recently purchased a 545 gs and after one season of use I have had no problems with it. I think that from now on all my salt and fresh water spinning reels will be shimano.
