Guatemala - Pacific Fins - March report

Sailfishing is heating up again, after a short lull. Fishy Business with Capt. Tito has reported 30-35 releases every day since Saturday (15 Mar). The owner is fishing on the boat this coming weekend and I should have a more detailed report for you next week.

Our clients, Paul Herman from Texas and Dave Lewis from Michigan, had a great time at Pacific Fins (11-17 Mar) fulfilling their dream of fishing with Capt. Hamlin. Accordingly their final release count was 41 sails, and Sunday was the last day with 26 releases.

Capt. Ron Hamlin – Pacific Fins Resort – Guatemala Fishing Report – March 20, 2008 reports the following:

Mr. Raymond Marceau, at the young age of 70 years old, fished on the Hooked Up and from March 10th - 12th he released 42 sailfish. Capt. Haron told Ray, “Not bad for your first time billfishing”, to which he smiled and replied, “You only live once!”.

On March 9 -11, Joel Katz and 3 of his good friends joined us at the Resort. They arrived at the same time as a late cold front. This was bad luck as usually the fronts are done by mid-March. The first day it was pretty rough and we spent the day hanging on, and never had a bite. This is highly unusual for Guatemala. On March 10th and 11th the weather got a little better and we raised 23 salifish, had 19 bites and released 10.

On March 11th while most of us were having a slower day, one boat ran 40 miles southwest and found the fish, so we started there the next day. Thank goodness we have a fleet of fast, new boats!

On March 12th Rob Newton and Rick Hazelwood joined us for a day of fishing with their wives, Lynne and Marcia. The girls had never been to Guatemala and Lynne had never caught a Pacific Sailfish. By the end of the day we raised 57 sailfish, had 51 bites and released 25!

On March 13 and 14, Paul Herman brought a couple of his friends down and on the first two days of their four-day trip they raised 25 sailfish, had 22 bites and released 13.

The Newton and Hazelwood party fished on the Hooked Up with Capt. Haron Valdez in the same area and had a steady day releasing 11 out of 17 bites. So we had 50 plus fish the day before and then a very average day? So where did they go overnight? I guess that’s what makes fisherman the optimistic souls they are. Well, we still have two more days to find them again, I’m sure we will, with all the boats working together as they do here, the fish can't hide forever.

Fishy Business owner Bill O'Keefe was down over the Easter Holidays with his wife and two grandsons, Matthew & Ryan, both accomplished young anglers in their own right. With Capt. Tito at the helm they noted there was still some "green water" in the area, but they pushed on. First day out then managed 10 sails released. Second day the water and weather improved to 28 released and final day 22 released. Over the three day period they raised 93 and released 60. We do expect the weather and water conditions to improve over the next few days.
