No BS An interview with Capt. Braden Escobar aboard the Blue

I recently had an opportunity to conduct a phone interview with Capt. Escobar:

Q Capt. Escobar – what is the season in Galapagos?
A Call me Braden. The season is year round, but the best fishing is January thru the end of June with a mini peak mid October through December.

Q Ok, Braden. What about the rest of the year – is the fishing bad?
A. It’s not bad – just that the seas are rough (6’s and 8’s) and we are in outboard boats that fits the standards of the Galapagian Government.

Q Then the fishing is good, just not as good as in the winter.
A Correct, the higher concentration of marlin follows the currents which Galapagos is made up of 5 that steer the pattern of bait and pelagic fish.

Q Which island are you operating from?
A San Cristobal

Q How long is the flight from Guayaquil?
A About 90 minutes.

Q Fishing hours?
A 7:30am to 5:30pm or there about as it depends on the migration of the fish.

Q How large are the Stripes?
A Very large – average 180-220 lbs, with an occasional 250 to 300. These are fish with big shoulders, large tails and extremely aggressive.

Q Do you see any Blues’?
A Yes, but not as often as we’d like – they are generally large around 450-500lbs. Large Blue and possibly black marlin can be targeted with overnight stays in the far north quadrant of the archipeligo. The locals concentrate in Western Isabella. We are thinking about putting together an experimental trip next year in February or March with a mothership and two boats. Those interested can sign up now, but nothing is in stone yet. It all depends upon demand.

Q The boats and equipment are new?
A The Blue is a couple of years old, 32 feet long. It fits the standards of the Galapagian Government – which means no inboard engines.

Q So, it has outboards?
A Yes, twin 200hp Yahamas

Q The tackle on board is 30-50-80?
A Yes, Penn & Tiagras 50’s and Everol 7/0’s. We don’t encourage anglers to use 30’s. They are just too light for the size of fish we encounter and we release our marlin healthy.

Q How about fly gear?
A Some, but the angler should bring his own and especially flies.

Q What do you recommend for flies?
A The Cam Sigler tube popper and pink is the best color.

Q What about the other areas in Ecuador – do you fish in Salinas or Manta?
A Yes we fish there also

Q Seasons?
A Manta is year round, but the best is June to January
Salinas is October thru January

Q How far in advance should we be booking our clients?
A Six to eight months - last minute bookings (less then 5 days) is not fessible for Galapagos unless the client take his own risk of flying out and orgnaizing his own airfare)
