Live(somewhat) from Xcalak Mexico

Hola mi Amigos,

The big story from Capt. Dom is that my family purchased a small villa with several nice rooms to rent way down here in the southern Yucatan! The town is called Xcalak, and it is a remote fishing mecca, with worldclass flats fishing, an absolute paradise. You can check out the town at Costa Maya, Xcalak and Mahahual (Majahual) Information pages and the villas at Villa La Guacamaya - Yucatan Peninsula in Xcalak, Mexico

We have already begun improvements, changed the name to Casa de Suenos, and I have been meeting witht the local flats guides, who I will hopefully get arranged to handle the inshore fishing. It is difficult to get into the transportation business down here, so I will begin the tedious and long process of obtaining the permission and permits necesaary to run deep sea offshore fishing down here in the winters from Dec. through April. Plans are to relocate for the cold winters along with my wife and dogs. My mom will be retiring here in Sept. and will run the villas along with a local caretaker. We have alot of work to do, improvements galore, and I have been working non stop starting with painting the entire place. Getting goods and necessary equipment is a chore, as there is nothing even remotely close by. There is no power, everything is eco friendly here with solar power, and wind turbines, wind is definitely noyt in short supply this week, it has been blowing sustained 20-30 since I arrived.

Thankfully there is an extensive lagoon ssystem, with abundant fish. I have been able to take a kayak out each morning, and have had a few nice snook, one BIG tarpon(estimate around 80 pounds) and plenty of barracuda. I opted to bring the spinning gear this time, and have been using a trevala rod and a shimano sustain 8000 loaded with braid and flor leader. I have been using the DOA shrimp in various colors, and have lost plenty to nasty barricuda. I got one of the snook on a jumping minnow, and had an unseen fish school me on a mullet lure as well.

I have had trouble getting a wireless signal, but tonight seems pretty strong signal.

I have been unable to get outside for grouper and snapper, which is too bad as right before I got here one of the guides had a huge cubera right off the backside of the reef in front of our new villa. I had brought my jigging stickand avet jx, along with way too many pieces of iron, which cost me as my check in bag was severly overweight. I plan on leaving most of it down herte for when I return in the fall.

Thats all for now, but I have 2 more days to go. I have been unable to talk my mom into following me into the lagoon for photos, as I have a hard enough time keeping the yak upright(it is a crappy touring yak, with no rod holder and a molded seat, which I will replace with several fiswhing yaks before I get back) and I cannot get out, it is mangrove lined, and big crocs supposedly inhabit, although I have yet to see any signs of them.

There are lots of amazing tropical birds, and tons of ospreys. A long, secluded beach with very few people walking it, and endless sunshine and heat. The temps have been in the low 80s, altjhough it feels much hotter.

I will be getting a webpage up, and plans are to open for guests mid October. I will of course be offering a fishermans special, so stay tuned for more info as it develops. You guys gotta start looking for airfare, and bring the wife, as it is a sweet place for evedryone to enjoy.

Talk to you all when I return on Wednesday, Hasta luego.....

Dom(aka senor Domingo)

hey guys, winds died down, hopefully gonna get out on the reef for some grouper digging. There are some impressive snapper as well, just waiting to see if I can get a boat.

Had another tarpon this morning, I guess my eyes are big because it was around the same size, and there were two other guys in a canoe, told me it was about 40 pounds maybe 50...it sure took me around on a mexican sleigh ride. I can't imagine whatone of the really big ones would pull like.

I down sized my lures today, and had fun with a bunch of jacks of various colors and sizes, and lost a few more lures to small barracuda, gotta remember wire next time.

Blake, there are small YellowFin Tuna and blackfin year round, with a few bigger specimens from time to time. The big show here is marlin, sailfish, and wahoo. The mahi are impressive sized as well. I was unable to get out as they are having some pretty stiff winds this week. The Chincorro bank lies just off shore about 18 miles, and there are pelagics galore, including some really big sharks.

Talk to you later, as long as the signal stays strong..

Hasta Luego,

Dom

Back in the US of A

Hola amigos,

Long day yesterday, delayed in Philly for an hour as a welcome home present....

Well, it is done, we closed, and are now the proud owners of Casa de Suenos. There is still tons of work to do, but we accomplished all the necessary paperwork, which is huge. There are plenty of laborers available at a great rate to get the exterior painted, and an electrician and plumber are set up as well. Should be able to start taking guests by as early as July...

I did manage to get out on the reef, although it was by myself as no guides were available. I unfortunately had to stay on the inside, and cast out and over the reef as no boat that could handle it was around. I borrowed a small panga from a neighbor with a 25 horse evinrude.

I hooked many sizeable fish, and lost everyone of them except one unlucky snapper, which we ate for dinner, it was delicious. The small one I got made the mistake of running right up the cut, and towrds me, or I probably would have lost him as well to the sharp coral. There are lots of fish waiting for me to return!

I included a picture of the new sign I painted, as well as dinner the last night we were there. We ate him with a nice side of black beans and rice, and sauteed chayote, a delicious local squash.

Very nice Dom. Great News.

I also see that the snapper is being held with the proper "pinky out" technique (LOL):
