Eesh-ka-lack is how it is pronounced, crazy mayan pronunciations down there.

The one pinky in, one pinky out technique is the only way to hold them snappers, LOL.

As long as we know the proper protocols when visting Xcalak, that's all that matters. Don't want to get bum rushed for presenting a fish in the improper fashion.

Dom, did ya get my email from last night?

Well, he should be enjoying some cheaper fuel down there, as Pemex is the only station in town. Heck in the country - nationalized oil system. Thankfully, you didn't go into Belize - where I see diesel is $10/gal Bze.

"Thankfully there is an extensive lagoon ssystem, with abundant fish. I have been able to take a kayak out each morning, and have had a few nice snook, one BIG tarpon(estimate around 80 pounds)"

Yes, there are many cenotes down there, pock marked all over the SE portion of the Yucatan. It's why Dial Dunkin set up shop there in the 1980's for all the great tarpon and snook fishing that could be had, a short distance from his house.

The closest Pemex is at the turn off to Xcalak, on the Mahaual access road, but the delivery truck brings it right to your doorstep if you need it, for an upcharge of course. fuel on the whole was pretty good throughout our travels, just be sure to watch the meter, as it is a famous gringo ripoff tactic of the attendants!! The remoteness of this paradise is what I love most, and there are plenty of side trips within a reasonable drive, including Lake Bacalar, the bay of seven colors, which has the most amazing water I have ever seen. Beers are ice cold, and cheap, as is everything else.

There are sooooo many untouched areas, but tapping into the local guides is a must for the serious angler. it is fine to do the solo thing like I did, but there were several gringos there who had gotten their very first permit of their lives while there, and one slam from the top guy in the area, Capt. Victor in Xcalak. Ptices are $150 half day, $250 full day, which includes beers and a lunch!!

I will be putting together more info as we get the place painted and ready for clients, and we will be offering a package deal for fisherman including guided trips.

The kayaks and snorkel gear will be provided Gratis, and the prices will be very, very affordable.

The bahia Chetumal is another spot close by, which I must check out on my return this fall.

Stay tuned for more developments, but start checking the flight prices into Cancun now, so I have soime local gringo company down there this fall/winter!

Don't forget the world class bonefishing and especially permit. The offshore fishing is an untapped, untested thing, as I found not 1 single outfit that does it there. I can't wait to test them waters for wahoo, marlin, tuna, and dorado next fall. I met up with a guy from chetumal who wants to take me out in his grady 300 marlin......

Sounds and looks good. Can't wait to hear and see more. Have been vacationing on west coast of Mexico for the last 7 years. Miss that crystal clear water over there. Wouldn't mind coming down for some of those tuna and the reef fishing. Cubera snapper are on my list of fish I want to catch.

There's a lot of competition for them at Boca Paila, Ascension Bay and Pesca Maya - just no one down there, exc the few guides that cross over from Ambergris Caye.
