Puerto Aventuras Mexican Riviera

I’ll be staying a the BarceloMayaPalace in mid-May and will be chartering a boat for at least one day of billfishing. Does anyone have any experience and or recommendations for charters out of Puerto Aventuras Mexico area (Yucatan). I am looking for hardcore tournament style fishing boat/captain/mate, not tourist fishing. Most of what I can see online seems geared for the tourist.

Captain Ricks seems to own the most www advertising....any good?

Thanks,
Will

Hi Will,

You will be there for the start of the prime offshore bite, in Mid May. Unfortunately all of the tourney type boats and crews will be involved in the heavy tourney circuit by then. Ricks fleet will be the best bet for a good crew, just call ahead and explain that you are very experienced, and want the best offshore crew and boat he has for your trip. Bring some of your own offshore lures, as the charters use the basics, and pull alot of bally. A great travel squid bar ios one of the Archer superbars, they are composite and bend up easy for packing.

Another suggestion would be to try Isla Mujeres, and see if you can get Capt. Anthony Mendillo or one of his buddies. He is a trop flight, high hook boat that specializes in sailfish and pelagics. His gear and boats are top notch, wotrth the extra trip into Cancun to pick up the ferry to Isla.

Another option would be to head south a bit towards Boca Pailia, Punta Allen, and Ascenbsion Bay. The flats fishing there is some of the best in the world, tons of huge permit, massive schools of Bonefish, baby tarpon to 40 pounds, and some impressive snook. The reef fishing there around AB is isnane at times, with Cubera to 60 plus pounds. PM me if you would like some detailed info on that area. YOu can reach Capt. Mendillo at the following:

Cancun Fishing Sport Fly Fishing Charters Isla Mujeres

I have had incredible succes with his outfit in the past.

Rick's fleet is geared towards more the tourist, although several of his local Capts. are very fishy dudes, provided you stress your needs properly prior to booking.

I am heading down there tommorrow, to fish AB, Xcalak, and Ambergris Cay, Belize. Flying into Cancun and renting a jeep to get me through the jungle.

I own property there in Xcalak(about 4 hours south of PDC), and would be happy to give you a bit more info on where to go, what to do, where to eat, etc....when I get back.
