Greetings Amigos! March 2007Marlin Myths Revealed

A Striped Marlin readying for release on board El Nuevo RedRum
Did you know...
  • most of the Striped Marlin wander in the ocean alone, but when breeding they may be in pairs or schools.
  • Blue and Black Marlin jump completely out of the water; most of the time Striped Marlin do not. This is one of the ways our captains and mates can identify a fish so quickly. [Don't tell them we told you.]
  • Marlin actually use their bill to "trip" the bait rather than using it as a weapon. Most people think they are trying to injure the bait. They are trying to trip up the bait to slow it down a bit so they can eat it.
  • a 130 lb Marlin is three times more reproductive than a 100 lb Marlin, a 170 lb Marlin is six times more reproductive than a 100 lb Marlin and a 230 lb Marlin is nine times more reproductive than a 100 lb Marlin. There is no better reason to release all your Marlin - help us keep this species thriving.
  • the Blue Marlin are known to exceed 2000 lbs, although one has not been captured on rod and reel.
  • trophy-size Blue and Black Marlin are females; males rarely exceed 300 lbs.
  • a Black Marlin was tagged off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and recovered off Norfolk Island in the South Pacific - more than 6,600 miles away.
