NBS Rhode Island Spot?

A few years or more back, I had a friend show me a few "local" spots in Rhode Island and the one that sticks most in my memory was in misquamicut, all i really remember about it though was driving over a small wooden bridge, and walking down a rock jetty alongside a fast moving channel. At the end of the jetty were surf casters on both sides of the channel, and i noticed a few of the locals were driving their trucks right onto the beach on the side i was on. Sorry if I am being too vague, but does this area sound familiar to anyone? I'd love to go back and try it a few more times...maybe toss one of them redneck spooks into the suds....

weakapaug

sounds like the Weakapaug breachway. It's hit or miss there but buy a $100 beach pass at Burlingame campground and chase the birds anywhere in south county

Fishcounter bob, are you saying that you can get RI oversand permit at Burlingame? I almost got it last year, but I thought you had to go to Narragansett or something like that. I had a tough time getting down there during the week to get the permit, which they actually required. 4X4 on the sand this winter sounds like a blast. East Beach has a huge inside route that I've hiked, would be fun in truck. Not sure if there are any fish around though, maybe some cod from the surf!~

Last I knew you went to Burlingame to get the CRMC Beach Vehicle Permit. Back when I got mine it was $50 and there was a list of equipment you had to have. They didn't check it when you got the pass but there were some hefty fines if you got stuck and didn't have it. East Beach is great but the sand is pretty deep in spots especially at the beginning of the sand trail. Watch out this time of year because the beach gets washed away and you end up on a cliff when on the beach front. If you get the urge to go out there, make sure you have a pass and the equipment. The other fishermen will probably not help if you don't have the right stuff.

You may have to air down your tires if you don't have wide ones. My stock tires and then my 30x9.5 had to be aired down on my Jeep. When I went to 31x10.5 I didn't air down. I did use low range pretty much exclusively. My Jeep had 3.07 gears and with the big tires was hard to get moving otherwise. The older carburated engines had better low end torque but the carbs pretty much sucked on those 4.2 engines. Each beach is different too. East Beach is deep. Watch Hill is pretty hard packed and rocky so it is easy to drive on. Charlestown Beach isn't too bad. I never really went on the Misquamicut beach area except down by Watch Hill (the locals call that East Beach also lol)

I haven't gotten one for the past 3 or 4 years. I used to fish the beaches all the time. If you just follow the birds, you can have some real fun out there.

I have an Expedition now and will probably take it out there next year with my son. I think he'll think its cool to ride on the beach and fish.

I do miss my CJ.........

I had 31 x 12.50 BFG's on her, they were FAT yet not too tall

And with the performance Clifford-modified 258 I built with the Holley 4-BBL and true dual exhaust headers and custom exhaust.........

Oh boy.....still have that "Formula dough" sitting around and would get me a SCHWEET CJ.......lol

When I said the carbs sucked I didn't mean that one. The 4.2 wranglers had troubles with the carbs. I know a few guys that had them rebuilt and they still weren't right.

I would take a CJ any day. I think my next thing is an old Tractor to fix up with my son. I'm thinking JD but maybe an old Cub Cadet or Wheel Horse... Someday we will get a Jeep again.

Did your father modify the 258..?

Never had trouble with my 4 cyl. toyota 4-runners. The 84-88 models had the removable cap. Great for the north rip at block island also. If needed let the air out to 15 lbs and when you are done free air at Dunn's corner. It's great driving on the beach any time of year. But don't drive faster than 15 mph piping plovers can only run 14

If on East Beach, Michaels also had free air last time I was out there. I used to get some Gas Station Pizza over there too.

LOL the 4.2's in the CJ's had problem carbs too, unless you had the old 1-BBL Carter YF, like I originally had. That carb actually ran very well, just not a ton of power.

LOL Clifford Performance is what I meant. I bought a mild "RV" cam, 390 Holley 4-BBL, dual exhaust header, Aluminum 4-BBL intake......Mallory dual-points distributor.....

All i did was replace drivetrain parts for a while until everything was upgraded LOL...that motor had some serious torque

OK, OK, so it's off topic, but is DOES have something to do with beach fishing, no?

it is $50 for RI residents, $100 for out of state.

The burlingame office is closed now, you would have to go to the gov. center on rt. 1.

you can't drive on any RI beaches east of Charlestown, even with the sticker.
