filleting fish at sea

legal??? I see many people doing it and my marina is removing are cleaning station this year. Same rules for pelagics, inshore species. Without a cleaning station I'm not sure what I can do with a 8' shark??

You are required to keep the racks on board with you for Fluke unless the fillet itself meets the minimum length requirements. You also need to keep the head and tail intact on striped bass until you get back to shore.

Sharks are under NMFS rules and must be kept whole while at sea. They CAN be gutted, but must be otherwise whole.

I clean sharks right on the dock or on the boat. They are the easiest and most enjoyable fish to clean, as there are no "racks" to contend with. Cut off the tail & fins, then cut into steaks perpendicular to the body, right thru the spine. No waste. When you get to the head, you can get some nice hunks of meat out of the top of the head to a point as well.

Chuck the remains over, there's less waste than an average Tog trip

Hooked lobsters

Are you allowed to keep a lobster you catch if it has the vee cut in it's tail?

no

lobsters with a v notch are proven breeders and must be returned to the drink at least in MASS. check state regs online

I know it hurts because they are usually big.

lobsters

Same goes for RI, no v-notch lobsters. Lobstering has been slow past few pulls, probably moving to cooler waters.

No - they need to go back in...hopefully they will make it to the bottom before getting eaten by a striper.

In regards to saving the racks, what about bottomfeeders like porgy, togs, and sea bass? same thing, right?
