Just A Dog

Just a Dog
From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog," or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog."
Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted.
Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.
If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand phases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise." "Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. "Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.
Because of "just a dog" I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.
"Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.
I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog" but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a human."
So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog." just smile, because they "just don't understand."

thanks chuck!

Chuck,
we lost our family dog of 12 yrs a year ago in September......Since then my wife has been resisiting the addition of a new dog siteing all the usual excuses: "it's so much work", "when will we be able to travel" etc., etc., Truth be told I think she's afraid to get attached and lose another friend. Last week I hung on our fridge the "Just a Dog" story you posted.....well, we will be picking up our new Lab puppy next week......thank you my friend!

Bob

Bob first off sorry to hear of the loss .I have two elderly springers .The mom is 13 and the chubby daughter is 11 They are both pretty much deaf and the mom is almost totally blind. There health is good for the time being .Tommorow is the first time in 13 years I wont be pheasant hunting with either one of them.I've become even closer to them as I have'nt worked in over a year due to back surgery. The 3 of us are getting old togeather .It wont be a good day here when the time comes.

On a good note Thats awesome you and your wife are getting a new pup. Dogs truely are man and women s best friends . I wish you the best of luck and many angry and happy times because they come with puppies . You and your wife understand ,
Its Not Just a Dog

I can realte Chuck. I've been home for similar reasons for almost 6 years. For the past 4 1/2 years, I've had my dogs keeping me company and keeping me sane. I do not care to think where I would be now without them.... Certainly not here. Young and disabled is a bad combination. They have helped me get through some nasty depression and continue to keep me from it.

Just a dog.... no such thing.

(well, I'm a dog)
