I just noticed the yellow banner (Amber Alert) announcing the cancellation of Michigan 5 year old girl. While I understand this form is nationwide, it appears that most of the members are located in the Northeast. Not sure how many members are located in Michigan, but there is little I can do or report what is happening so far from my residence. On the other hand, there was a near amber alert reported just last night; almost in my backyard (see insert). Fortunately the youngster escaped these thugs, but a description of these thugs and their vehicle was provided. These alerts are put out by the Town of Stonington Police. While the child is safe, these bastards are still on the prowl. Helping the police to nail them could prevent another future incident from happening. While the conduct of this form, is of course, decided by its board, however, if the decision has been made to post amber alerts, would it not be better to target the areas with the highest concentration of active members?

| Scup, The Amber Alert ticker shows all active Amber Alerts in the USA. They could be in Michigan or in our backyard. Not to mention, taking a minute to click on it when it is yellow and look at the child's photo could end up with someone spotting the child anywhere. I mention this, as the one from Las Vegas alerts from last week had the child near 1,000 miles from the abduction point 6 hours after the kidnapping. I figured I'd put it up as all it can do is help...if folks take the time to click when it is yellow. | ||

| I understand! Guess I am like a horse with blinders on and only look not much further than my nose. Always thought Stonington was a relatively crime free town but apparently that idea has now been trashed considering the brutal murder we recently had at a boatyard and the above inserted alert of a near child napping. Never would have thought a child could end 1000 miles away in six hours; complements of the jet age.

| Update in todays paper: Stonington - Police said Monday that last week's report by a 10-year-old Mystic boy that he was the victim of an assault and attempted abduction was false. ”We know there was a great deal of concern by the public. We want to let them know the case is closed and that this incident did not happen as reported,” said Police Chief J. Darren Stewart. The Wednesday evening report prompted police to send out a bulletin to area towns and assign additional patrols in the Seaport Heights neighborhood. Teachers and school officials reminded parents and students about how to deal with strangers. ”We took this very seriously. We put extra people in the area and we followed up on leads,” he said. Stewart said police “pretty quickly had concerns about the legitimacy of the case” but needed to thoroughly investigate it. He said police then went back to talk to the boy on Monday, and he admitted the incident did not happen. Saying he considers it a juvenile matter at this point, Stewart declined to say why the boy made the report or whether he would be charged with filing a false complaint. The boy originally told police that two men in a black van with South Carolina plates drove up to him as he was skateboarding in the neighborhood off Route 27. He said the driver of the van got out and chased him and at one point struck him in the head. The boy told a parent, who called police. The boy gave police a South Carolina license plate number for the van. | ||

| As usual, I am guilty of jumping the gun. It never would have occurred to me that a youngster could make up such a tale. The current system used for amber alert on this form proved itself to be far better and stable than my idea of posting local and unsubstantiated alerts, which would have had people looking for imaginary perpetrators and getting excited over naught.
