I have sold my previous boat and now I am getting serious about buying some offshore gear for the Parker. My first purchase is going to be an EPIRB. I have not done any research yet and wanted to get opinions from you guys who run out to the edge. What is needed and what is the most cost effective. Eventually I will purchase a liferaft but I think this is the logical first step. What do you guys think of the personal locators???? | ||

| I think the personal locators are OK as long as you first have a primary unit. The personal ones have some limitations, I was told by LRSE. Battery Life, signal, etc. Contact www.lrse.com (Middletown, RI) for info directly, but I ended up with the ACR GlobalFix 406 at a great price a couple years ago. That said, a Personal Locator is better than none.......but i also bought a liferaft from them.....the Switlik 4-man Rescue Pod. Also great price, great quality. I never had more than 4 on my boat offshore when I had my Formula. My quick .02 ![]()

| ACR Global Fix 406 Category II , did the best in tests. You can probably check Boat US. for tests and reviews. . You can save a couple hundred with the self deployed model. Another source is Consumers Marine.com .. Hopefully youll never need it. | ||

| HI: Bryan, I concur with the ACR 406, Primary first. Just one note to consider if you are thinking about ever getting a com. Tuna permit. you will have to have your Raft checked (inflated, tested repacked and cirtified) every year . This includes the (Hammer ) Auto release at a cost of $ 100 or more. My point is if you get a Epirb with Auto release you will have to get the (Hammer) replaced every ?? 2 years??. Not sure about this time but they are Dated. Don BTW my Tuna permit might be available after this season. GGGGRRRRRRRRRRR.
